Flash cannot detect AF during night event

I need help…I was using my EX580II flash on my 5dmk2 for one of the night event which was close to pitch dark. I do not have enough light source to allow AF to detect and snap the photos. I was told by a fellow Nikon guy there that I could sync to AF on my flash which I could not figure out how. His Nikon cam was able to detect. Can someone enlighten me on the steps to do so? Many thanks.

Turn on AF assist beam.

Make sure lens is in AF mode. Test in a dark area, you should see a red beam of light when you half press to auto focus. If no red beam, test your flash on another body if possible.

Servo won't have AF beam as it is continuously focusing.

Read your manual, please. No point asking here if you don't even know the basics. AF modes are clearly explained in a dedicated chapter.
