I started this tread more as a "Think about" for fellow photographers who are thinking about this lens.

The 24mm f/1.4G is a pretty famous lens for its sharpness and has gained reputations for being the sharpness king at wide angles and big apertures.

But this is also a very expensive lens. Easily selling in Singapore for 2900 SGD. That is quite a BIG sum of money to invest into a prime lens.

As capable as this lens is both at yielding Bokeh (Blurry back ground effects) and sharpness, it may not be a lens for everyone and in the last 2 weeks, i am seen at least 4 ads selling the 24mm f/1.4G because it is under utilized and they are mostly placed for sale with running valid warranty.

Below are my uses for this lens, so a person who is attracted to the 24mm f/1.4G can use it as some form of a referrence tick box to tick "If this is what i'll use it for" and decide if there are better cost effective options. Surely, there are other uses that those listed below. Will be great for fellow users of this lens to add their application to the list.

Uses.
1) Landscape Photograhpy (Mainly overseas) where CPL and ND filters are required to compose the shot. Lakes, Moutains with Snow, Water falls, Sunset at rocky beaches, Panoramics. I do not have another lens at 24mm that can take filters. There are plenty of 24mm focal length lens out there that are very Sharp and can take filters. Example: 16-35mm f/4 VR, 24-120mm f/4 VR, 24-70mm f/2.8

2) Astronomy related photograhpy like Milky way and Northernlights. (No luck to get anything nice due to the weather/season when i travel although another opportunity is coming up this year and another one next year)

3) Photography that uses large apertures at f/1.4. Again, i do not own other f/1.4 lens. Typical uses are photograhpy of Food, Pet animals, People and shots that i want object isolation

4) Indoor architecture photograhpy that can be low light and where tripod is not possible. This is because i dont have a wide angle VR lens at 24mm, hence to reduce camera shake, shooting it wide open or f/2 at infinity.

Hope the above helps. :)

I just want this lens for wide open aperture environmental portrait/people shots.

Its the best lens they make.... I waited for this for a decade..... I love it.

It's not expensive at all.... in fact it's sharper wide open than Leica $6500+ 24mm f1.4 lens.... so many sources say. :)

It is one of those lenses where you will get it if you need it.

For the hobbyist, get it if you can afford it and somehow want that lens.

That would be one of my workhorse lens, once I earn enough for it.... I'm settling for a sigma 24mm F/1.8 for now...

A very good "photo-journalistic" lens for actual day wedding and many events type work that requires you to shoot in low-light or flash-less.

However this lens is not for the faint hearted as it is obviously not easy to use 24mm as a main working focal length.

Horizon management and distortion comes into the picture.

At the same time this lens will have a bit of trouble to focus towards infinity on some nikon bodies. A good grasp & knowledge of AF micro-adjustment is a prerequisite else some unlucky fella will sure hit a bad body-lens combination.

as a side note, anyone looking for a quality 24mm on a budget should consider the 24 f/2.8 AIS. its every bit as good as the 24-70 2.8 (better distortion control too), and costs only about 300+ for a mint condition copy. 52mm filter thread will help with cost too. this would be esp useful for landscape shooters who don't need the extra speed.

wrt the 24 1.4, i'd get it to shoot at 1.4 and 2 for environmental portraits and street photography. not so much for the speed but for the dof and rendition. IMO, dont get caught up on how sharp a lens is i personally feel contrast, rendition, colour cast and flare control contribute much more to the final image (in addition to composition/perspective of course)

Was thinking of getting this or the 16FE to replace my 10.5FE which is a DX and I'm using FX now.

This lens is sharp but not everyone can handle it.

I saw very bad pictures taken from someone claims to be pro photographer.

My most used lens so far. One of the main reasons I jumped to Nikon.

But with the new 28/1.8G, I'm starting to question this lens, lol.
Anyone happen to have both or downgrading from 24G to 28G?

i got this lens when it first came out. Not sure why i have focusing issue with this lens. I used less than 5 times and i thought of selling it :(

fyi i'm using on a D300s

The only bad thing when you stay at passage or balcony at the small space you can't backward on 2 more step an you miss out the 4mm different.

All the rest on 28mm f1.8G should be not much diff on 24mm wide and f1.4 aperture..

When you felt your pocket money has been overfall, even buy leica just like peanut,
Why not you have no reason to own both :)

I have 2, and i am keeping the 24mm, maybe i will sell the 28 after sometime .. 4mm is a lot of different .. 1.4 has a much better bokeh effect.

Yup, I know how value for money Nikon f/1.8G lenses are.

I got the 85/1.8G instead of the f/1.4G because for f/1.4G price, I got myself a 85/1.8G & a used 70-200VR1. So I'm thinking of selling D700 + 24/1.4G to get D800 + 28/1.8G.

I dont mind losing the 4mm as I can get a 20mm to fill in for tight space or landscape.

Is the bokeh really obvious? Because for 85mm, although on paper the f/1.4G is so much better, not many people can spot the difference in actual usage.
