Hi All,

I'm thinking of selling my Canon 450D and getting the Sony Nex 5N, what can you guys say? I need some advice.

I haven't really use my 450D for a while now, prolly because I'm getting tired of carrying it as it is bulky and heavy.

Thanks,
John

the 5N is a great camera for it's size

so go ahead and get it :)

Same advises for practically the same type of questions,

1) Go down to the shop and test out the camera, see if you like the feel of the camera or do you prefer the DSLR style camera with more control, dials etc.
2) Do not discount mirrorless interchangeable lens camera offering from other brands such as Olympus/ Panasonic m4/3, Pentax (both K-01 and Q), Nikon J1/V1, Samsung NX-series
3) Do try up Sony's SLT camera which is quite a bit lighter than traditional DSLR (but if you find 450D heavy and bulky, I doubt SLT is the camera for you. But no harm trying them out.)

the new SLT-A37 is pretty small. just slightly larger than the NEX-7

The NEX 5N is a great cam, the only little negative part is that there's no built-in flash. It comes with an external flash unit, although it small and light, it still adds to the bulk

Not by a lot though. What i don't like though is the EITHER flash OR EVF option

NEX-F3 might be a good choice then

Agree

and I am glad that they came up with the NEX 7; both built in evf and built in flash

Not glad about the price though

well... u know what they say... gd thing don't come cheap :bsmilie:

Thanks for all the inputs guys!

Follow up question though, does it really matter if the camera don't come with a built in flash? I mean, you don't really use it right?

This question can only be answered by urself. I mean, how would we know if you use it or not. For me... I never use my inbuilt flash. I use an external flash. But different people have different preference.

if you don't use the EVF and prefer using the LCD to compose your shots, then the NEX-5N should be good enough for you

I've used the built in flash for fill flash and as commander. Dunno about commander mode in nex but fill flash is certainly useful.

the NEX-5N has an external flash that comes in the box.

but this flash has no Wireless mode. if TS has no interest in off-camera flash, then there's no point debating the usefulness of it

Thanks a lot guys! I think I'll probably sell my 450D first then get a mirrorless camera. I really liked Nex 5N.

Thanks Kei!

you're welcome.

and it's "like", not "liked". "liked" is past-tense and it means that you don't like it any more ;)

I have a 5N and love the portability and low light performance. No flash is okay as can fix with higher iso. So much so I stopped using my dslr.

The negatives for me are
- the LCD screen is difficult to see in bright light. It gets so bad sometimes that you cannot see what you are shooting, just estimate.
- need to fix on the flash to use as fill light when the natural light angle is wrong.
- shutter lag and AF is definitely slower than dslr, so for taking pic of kids will be more challenging

I don't think the shutter lag is slow, though certainly the AF is not dslr speed or the best amongst the available mirrorless cameras. 5N hi iso performance is excellent, EVF & focus peaking is the best for mirrorless cam. The negatives for me is more of the native lens range, especially UWA & fast zooms. Nonetheless, a very capable camera if the native lens range are good enough for you. If not, there are certainly many options for manual lenses to be adapted.
