Hi Everybody,

Should I buy the Canon 550D or Canon 600D? The package at Alan Photo is about $1000 and for $250 more, I can buy another bigger zoom lens. Which model should I buy and should I buy the additional zoom lens?

Can I have your advice?

Thanks in advance. Have a nice day.

What you want to take?

Whether you need to bigger zoom or not all depends on your shooting style. What do you like to shoot? Btw just curious to know why have you chosen only Canon? It's good if you look at other similar models from other brands. Each camera has it's own pros and cons and some with unique features.

For $250 more, which is the bigger zoom lens?

consider a 7d at Buy and Sell personal classified section. good camera. meet your budget too

Must it die die be Canon? Do you need a DSLR, or any interchangeable lens camera? What do you want in your camera? What is your budget?

All these questions needed to be answered first. There are heaps of cameras out there in the market that had great features and good value for money.

read the sticky threads in newbies corner, these are contributed by helpful and experience members, spending hours doing research and compile them into useful information in plain English, specially for people who are new in photography.

If you want the tilty-swivel screen thingy(one of the major diff between 550D vs. 600D) then 600D is good.

Both cameras use the same sensor so you won't really notice any visible changes in picture quality.

I presume the zoom lens you're talking about is the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens? If you need the zoom you can consider this lens. But if not, I guess you will rarely find the need to zoom that far.

Depending on the lenses given in the package. please state the lenses that they give to you, then fellow clubsnap members here can advise better

Somehow many people thinks having dslr will magically turn photos into better ones without seeing the need to learn proper skills and knowledge. Are you sure you are ready to commit into photography by buying a dslr?

If the size and weight of dslr and lenses are not a problem for you to bring out then by all means. Otherwise you might want to consider other smaller mirrorless systems which do give you quality photos too.

Between the two choices I would go for 600D because of its screen. But given your budget I would go for 650D instead. As for which lens package, why not tell us what camera do you own know and do you find yourself having the need to zoom far.

Thanks for the reply everybody!! I'll try to answer all.

I choose Canon for sentimental reasons. Long ago, I was president of a photographic society in junior college. I used a Canon AE-1. So I just want to rekindle my hobby of photography.

I don't have a camera now. I would like to take photos of people and nature. The basic package comes with a 18-70mm zoom. Do I need to buy a flash?

How do I go about learning how to take good photos? Join one of your photography outings? Join a society?

Thanks in advance

1. Read the manual
2. Read the many many online articles, the newbies stickies here
3. practice practice practice.

Forget joining a society - give them money for what? As for outings, they can help but won't hold your hand unless it's specifically a newbies outing.

Why is it I never get notified by email whenever there's a reply to my thread? Other forums will do that.

Does this mean you are not considering other brands or models?

You do not get subscribed by default.

You can subscribe to the thread by going to "thread tools" (right at the top of the thread), click this, and then clicking "subscribe". That should do the trick,

if you're comfortable, go for the 7D if you can spare the budget.

otherwise, just get the 600D

If you do not look like an experienced buyer and you do not know anyone there well... then the answer is NO.
