1.in what area is critique to be sought?

i am a newbie in landscape, the picture look okay to me .But would like to know more from the expert.

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?

i hope from the comment i get i can learn more about landscape photography.

3.under what circumstance is the picture taken?

Taken at around 7pm at night. Taken using Nikon D3 16-35mm f4 lens.ISO160 16MM F/10 8sec with tripod and remote.

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture.

i think the picture colour is ok , but hope to improve more hopefully from the comment receive.

it is a lovely photo at first sight, nice blue skies and the exposure seems spot on.

My comments:
1. horizon is slightly tilted to the left.
2. Would like a looser crop to reveal more of the sides. Might be better if there are some breathing space at the left... just personal preference.

Lighting and exposure are good. I love the blue hue caused by the sunset. Composition can be improved- the horizon is slanted and the camera is pointed down. I would move it up slightly so that there's more headroom for the top of MBS. The floating platform on the right side is also distracting, maybe you could try shooting from another angle?

yes i fully agree with all the comments, my biggest mistake is lack of attendtion to composition , back home look at the picture than saw it tilt to the left , try to correct it make the picture look to tight.

Besides what's mentioned above, I would have taken another shot when the "boat" did not passby leaving the light trail behind.

good effort but the composition is not the best to start with.

for me, it feels a bit claustrophobic for the top half as the MBS is uncomfortably close to the top edge.

then the CBD on the right is abruptly cropped off, with part of the floating platform distractingly sticking in from the right side.

would have prefer lesser of the water for this kinda shot as again, the photo seemed top heavy to me.

maybe you can compose in such a way whereby the helix bridge leads into the photo via the bottom left corner. in a way you can leave more headroom for MBS, cut down on the amount of water and put the 1/3 rule into good use.

just my 2cts views.

If you've decided to include so many elements in a single frame, you really need to study each and everyone of them in detail. Ask yourself if the MBS, museum, floating platform, buildings in the CBD actually gel with each other and if this is the best vantage point.

In this 1st photo, the floating platform(with the light masts) appeared to be a messy distraction more than anything else.

The 2nd photo was slightly cropped and although the platform is not as distracting, the entire composition is unbalanced with buildings in the CDB being pushed to the extreme right and so much empty space on the left of the frame.

I though the light trails of the boat in the 1st photo was a nice addition. I suspect the blue hue is due to your white balance setting rather than ambient light.

too much blue in it, the side walls of MBS and Art Museum turn blue also.... lol

a nice touch of the light trails of river cruise, it added interest to the photo, I always try to include them that when I shoot around that areas.

a hotshoe spit level does help, you can get it from your upstairs.

You can try aligning the sides of the CBD buildings to be parallel to the vertical frames.

For everything in the scene to line up nicely, you need to take care of 2-axis, namely pitch and tilt. If one of this axis is out, your buildings will not be aligned with the edge of the frame. Aligning only the buildings in the CBD might not be foolproof since you could be only fixing one axis and not the other. A 2-axis bubble leveller is a much better gauge.

Hot Shoe Bubble Level -Twin axis, 2 bubble level. Red Door VR Ltd. UK Mail Order.

you can get this from Mass sale section or virtual shops, but whatever way is convenient to you.


btw, you are doing great, it took me many years than I able to shoot something like these..... lol
