First time Daddy

Hi Guys, Wife is in her 8 months now and I am left with 4 weeks or so. What I need help is, I wants to take the moment photos in the labour ward

This coming friday, I be meeting the midwife and gonna ask her as well if I could take some memories photos in there. But those with experience could share some tips what I should do? Like how do you hold your wife hand while baby is coming out and at the same time take the shoot?

I only have 17-55mm and 30mm f1.4 with me now. With is more practical to use? I wants to use 30mm f1.4 but I am not sure of the operation room size.

Pls advise me thank you so much.

You probably will only be taking photos before the cervix is fully dilated and after the baby was safely delivered....

Can you imagine behaving like paparazzi or a documentary shooting when your wife is in great deal pain pushing the baby out...

Probably the 17-55 will be of more use to just take some quick snap and assist and enjoy the birthing process....

Firstly congrats......

Like what Bro say.... wife first.... after bb arrived and clean up... you have tons of time to take.... before that, take care of wife first..... beside.... some nurse might not allowed you to take the "special zone".... like mine few years back.... though no intention, the nurse reminded me not to..... let the doctor and nurse do their job... after bb nicely clean up and all that... bb all yours....

it's going to be quite an exciting experience for you!

sharing my xp: when my wife was in labour, all thoughts of photo-taking was out of my mind. In fact, the nurse had to remind me to take photos of my baby when they were cleaning her up.

Anyway, stick to the 17-55, you may not have the space to use your 30mm.

what about doing a video? you can still extract frames from it. although you might have to remove the audio afterwards.

It is not just blood, there are other mess as well when the "water bag" is burst by the gynea....
the nurse did mentioned about husband fainting....
what you can do is stay near your wife face, look at her and hold her hand.... let the gynea and nurses to everything including cutting of the umbilical cord.... (it kind of look like chee cheong fun when the ends are clamp and cut just like CCF as well)

You can take better precious moments photos when the baby is cleaned up and is moved over to mother to let her hold for the first time. The first look between the mother and child and her holding the baby will be priceless. Just remember to capture a couple of that scene.

This depend on which hospital. Some only allow photo taking after baby is cleaned and weighed and some allow you to practically do a documentary of the whole process. You have to check with them.

Congrats! Hmm, why not using compact camera? Afterall you need another person to take photos of your new born + wife + you. Just imagine the nurses do not know how to use the complicated DSLR. Please do the cutting of the cord, it'll be a great experience; you need someone to take the special moment photos too. Cheers!
