sharpness in Nikon 50mm 1.8G vs 85mm 1.8G

had these 2 superb lens, but feel 50 is better.

At the same distance , 2-3 feet from a model. Both lens shooting at 2.8, 50 seems to be sharp all the time. 85 on the other hand is abit erratic. Sometimes sharp, sometimes blur. Stopping the 85mm down to F4 is much better or same as the 50mm at 2.8, same distance.

Any idea why is this so?

Could be your technique. At longer focal lengths, any movement will be more pronounced. Hence if your hands are shaky, the shots from the 85mm will be blurred more than the 50mm. I suspect this is the case since you mentioned that it only happens sometimes.

It may be your lack of experience in handling the lens.

Can be motion blur, can be errors in focus, amongst so many errors.

Use a tripod and shoot with mirror lock up for both lenses at the same settings. If images appear sharp after that, it should be because of your handhold technique / shooting at too low shutter speeds.

ya, my hands are shaky. So far I have only shot with 16-55, 35 and 50. at 1/200, I still feel 85mm are abit hard to handle. 1/320 could be safer. So confirm nothing to do with distance right?

Depending on what u shoot .. Sometimes a photo is not all about sharpness. I shot at 1/50 or 1/80 very often, i find it sharp enough for my portrait work .. Whats the point of buying f1.8 len but using it at f4 ..

A photo is not about sharpness, noise free, high contrast, a photo must be able to broadcast your perspective and view to others.
