I saw an advestisment at facebook and talk abt how abt going green n got a contest. But at office, my colleagues told me, the server rooms lights (all the room) must on 24/7! Instructions given by auditor and that person is an FT! Over their country no power, come over here and waste our resource? Not even a single soul, also on, win liao lor. What can i do, i just a small fly down there. I dont even on the light inside my home pc room so much, I really feels sad n angry now. Really want to bash up that person n my management listen to such brainless person somemore. Curse them if got next life, born in africa and suffers like hell!

The guy isn't wrong. Pardon me, but you are the one that's ignorant. The aircon and lights of ALL server room must definitely be switched on. In case you think I m blasting you, i will just give u a few reasons:

The heat from stacking tonnes of harddisks in the server rooms get very very very hot, which is why the air-con is on 24/7 to cool them. The computer fan itself is not sufficient. You don't run ur computer 24/7 but a company runs 24/7, and everyone needs to access server data 24/7. If the harddisks are constantly in usage, it will get hot, and u need air-con.

And of course for the lights to be needed to switch on 24/7, there's also reasonS. 1st - If the temperature inside the room gets too hot and it burns, having lighting within will allow u to see clearer from outside where's the problem. 2nd - If there are unauthorised personnel inside the room, you won't see it if the lights are off, so the lights must be switched on 24/7. Bear in mind, the data in the server room are the lifeline of the company, and cant afford to get stolen and get destroyed, air-con and lighting is just 2 basic things which u saw. There are many many many many other precautionary stuffs which are running 24/7.

When the server room catches fire, or when data gets stolen, every shareholder will KILL the person that suggested offing the aircon and lights.

Challenge the auditor on why lights must be on... If he can justify, let it be. Bcos at least it serve a purpose.

For data centre yes lah... If for sme, i think management can make the call.

we even have several half tonne giant UPS units installed to keep the whole server room running for another 48hrs in case electricity gets knocked out (just in case anything happen on weekends too)

AND a construction site sized diesel generator in another open area connected to kick in just incase the UPS runs out of juice

My ex customer have a small server room, n lights r off.. No one can go in without the key anyway...

N some have no server rooms... All servers in a rack at a corner... After work, lights all off.

Yup, i work in dc n for 14 yrs, the lights are off n we are told to off the lights daily when no one inside. During fire, shouldnt the electicity be cut off and so, how the lights going to on? I never mention of the aircon n thats a need, for what I knew.
If really big fire, the in hse system will be activated n put out fire first n fireman dont need lights to be on when they putting out fire, right?
Been told for security reasons, cant see during the night. Pls la, if that person can enter there and mess with those system, have to get pass us first. Furthermore, can the thieves work in total darkness? That person before reaching our room, also need to get pass security and other door access. Unless that person is a ninja lor.
The daily amount of power comsume can be use for my hse 1 mth liao. (roughly 50 flouscent lamps) Ready sad that we singaporean wasting so much power when we got so many campaign for green going on. How not to be sad n angry when we are controlled by other who dont have the mindset of not going green?
Nvm, let those who like to waste power carry on. I just do my parts on saving electric whenever I can. I know some of you will think why i bother when not my $, but I feels sad when I dont see a purpose to waste just like that.

I think it is absolutely unnecessary for the lights in server to be turn on 24/7 however aircon is a must.

bro. please look at who is giving the command. if you're not the IT Consultant, they won't give a hoot about you. but if the IT Consultant says so, whether he/she/it is a Foreigner or Local, that rule is king.

if you want the whole world to go green please see this list:

1) shut down all power plants
2) scrap all cars
3) all wastefulness should be charged/fined

feel free to add on to the list.

Hi TS, we posted the same time so I don't know you knew the reason for the light is for security. Complain to the auditor's boss is more efficient if you doubt what was advised is not necessary... Let them explain better.

I read that a plant-based diet actually has a carbon footprint 1/3 that of a typical regular diet consisting of meat including fish and poultry.

Perhaps TS might want to considering converting into a vegetarian if he is not already one since if has a far greater impact on mother nature than any other green methods of environmental conservation.

seriously, there are so many Singaporeans bashing Australians for being so biased towards immigrants and foreign workers. the Australian Ang Mohs forget that their ancestors were immigrants from Britain!

but why don't Singaporeans look at their own country and criticize themselves for thinking the same about foreigners in Singapore? once upon a time YOUR ancestors were immigrants too.
