Might wanna look in the Panasonic and Nikon sections for the users and the usage threads. Will be faster than expecting them to come in here.
I was just wondering the same thing. What are the pros and cons of GoPro vs a waterproof camera like the Lumix.
I know the gopro is made with the purpose of shooting video first and stills second, but it does seem very versatile given that it can be mounted. Apparently it has 170 deg angle and i think that can produce very interesting stills.
A read that Canon has the Powershot D20? But i don't see it on their website. Anyone knows if it's coming out soon?

u mean this camera. first of all.. it has very limited uses. mainly for sporting enthusiasts to record footage from their moving vehicles e.g. motorcycles. it has a fixed focal length, and only 5MP. though it's pretty impressive in terms of durability on paper, i don't think this is what a photographer would want to use as a camera for play time.
If you're intending to use the camera in say a beach environment with the occasional water splash, most of these "waterproof" cameras should be durable enough (even if they will still differ in image quality, features etc.).
The story's very different if you're actually going to submerge the camera into water though while swimming, scuba-diving. A lot of even the popular models have reported failures here and there once they go into water. You can find these user experiences on Amazon, and some of these supposed underwater cameras reported failure the first time it was submerged.
I did research recently buying a underwater camera for up to ~3-5m depth purposes, and eventually settled on a Canon entry-level PnS + a first party underwater housing for it. Total cost was about SGD310.

well..actually thinking of getting one PnS cam that can be used once a while while going to the beach..swimming pools with those candid shots..shockproof is because sometimes i might pass to a kid to handle the recording or take a shot..(butter hands maybe?)

Was thinking of getting a similar PnS, and so far Lumix FT3 is my first choice.
Still waiting to see if the FT4 is significantly better, and perhaps go for the new model, or get the FT3 after the price drops

I am actually looking for a dedicated waterproof cam too...too much hassle with using those 3rd-part watercase. It is hard to decide which is a better option, I am narrowing it down to Olympus Tough Series TG620 and Nikon AW100. Love the Nikon for the product design but love the Oly for the specs....:S Hard to pick. They are about the same price. Is there any upcoming electrical or computer fair?

If your intention is to go deeper than 5m underwater, then there is no substitute for dedicated underwater housing w camera. The only other option is the nikonos which is discontinued n a film camera.
Those so called waterproof pns is only rated to 5m n i would only use them at up to 3m personally.

Been using my OlympusTough 8000 for almost a year and a half before it got drown 2 weeks ago. i had develop a habit of cleaning the battery and charging interface port door's seal and coat a thin film of silicon grease. unfortunately i got complacent too rush on that nite. Its not whether if your camera will drown....its just matter of when... The colour contrast is so so as a compact (work great in outdoor lighting) . like the tap mode to change functions and its compactness
just got a used FT3. slightly bigger than the tough series, the hold is good. colour and quality is better,sharper . the additional wow is the inbuilt GPS (need time to aquired the sateilites) compass,barometer,altimeter is wooow! however i will think twice before i bring it down underwater..... the design of the door which house the battery,SD card, usb port ...all under one door..needed discipline to maintance seal.
Suggest invest in a uw housing/casing if intend to use underwater more and not rely on the camera seal.
Am eyeing at canon for any miracle if they come up with uw camera since their D10.
