Azure

1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Composition, techniques, how differently or similarly you would have approached this shot. Also, on titling too (i'm terrible at this), how would you have titled this photo?

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
To capture the feel of the soon-to-be demolished old HDB flat on the left, against the backdrop of the beautiful sky and Holland Village in the background.

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
Clear and bright, rather sleepy Sunday afternoon in a quiet, deserted part of the estate. I wanted to capture the place before it becomes inaccessible to public due to the construction works that i reckon will start soon.

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
Personally as a newbie to photography who just upgraded from iphone cam to EP3 earlier last month, i think this is one of my better attempts already. i did some (not that extensive, done in 2 minutes kind) post-processing to make the colours more punchy.

Appreciate your time and effort in critiquing. thanks!

Personally as a newbie here too; The colours of the clouds are nice and the horizons are straight,
but I felt it was distracting as I don't know where my eyes should focus.

(For a moment; I looked at the sky > Buildings at the back > pathway on foreground.)

To show contrast between the soon-to-be demolished HDB flat with the sky and 'still-surviving' buildings;
I would take from the perspective where-by it allows me to differentiate clearly the subjects,
such as moving away to a position,
Then I would be able to portray soon-to-be demolished HDB on the left
and modern buildings at the right along with a stretch of road in the center which acts as a "divider."
Sky could then act as a colour contrast as located above midway top of the frame.

Hmmmm...

Thanks for your comments Iabound. I shall need to digest what u mentioned... Am a bit groggy in the morning! Hehe....

As a hobby photographer I'm also having same problem cos I don't know what to shoot. No inspiration basically. So maybe best for u to start shooting subject that u have personal interest in or opinion on. It seems to me you don't really care for the subject that u have shot here. There is no story or if there is, it is not obvious. Even a real natural born artist usually paints or whatever the subject they like or care about.

Iabound, i'm finally done with work! Tks again for your input. The sky is beautiful, and i agree that the sky draw the most attention first when looking at the pic. Guess i should not have centred with the blue sky right in the middle. End up taking the focus away.

Benedium, yep you are right. I don't have a preset idea of what i wanted to shoot when i went out. I only knew i wanted to go to the enbloc flats at holland drive. The prob is i'm still finding out what genre i like or dun like. So i guess i'm doing a bit of everything for now until i know where my strength n interest lies. Tks for your comment...

Hello, Dajota, congrats with your EP3. Its a great camera. Also a Pen user myself for quite a while now.

Would agree with some of the comments that one is not able to determine the subject here. Is it the soon-to-be demolished flats/shophouses or sky. Without knowing the subject, it's harder to title, though it seems you have titled it "azure";)

I would treat them separate - the old flats and shophouses. The sky though has great potential and would be nice to have it with the shophouses. Old flats can be taken differently, like some zoomed in views to show a few units without any signs of people staying, no curtains, no clothes hanged etc, or a corner of the flat against a contrasty blue sky etc...Do work more on the composition and how you want to draw audience attention, that's one of the most important basics in photography.

The Pen has great art filters and do explore them sometimes you get amazing results, try the dramatic tone art filter very fun. My 2 cts.

Shoot more, experiment more, learn more:)

Thanks wonglp for your friendly advice! yeah i guess i didn't know what to title my shot and the very fact that i named it Azure probably meant i was proudest with the blue sky that grabbed my attention more than the old flats!

hahaha... i have not really experimented much with the art filters, only tried it once or twice.. maybe i should use them more often like u suggested! I like your idea of the no clothes hanging on the line thing... i can 'imagine' such a shot in my mind!

but what i did try was to take a shot through a broken window of a childcare centre on the void deck, but the shot was a mess and i wouldn't even deign to put it up here... maybe gotta see how other pple do shots like that before i can better compose my shot. =P

Nonetheless, thanks again! =)

You're welcomed; hope it helps, just my personal opinion :)
