Canon EF-S 17-85mm or 18-200mm

Hi All,

I have a noob question here. I'm puzzling whether I should buy 17-85 or 18-200mm to use with 60D. The price for these lens are almost on par and the difference is one have 1mm more wider but short in zoom whereas the latter have longer zoom range with 1mm lesser wide angle. I would like to get your suggestion which one to get in terms of overall image quality, built quality and etc...

This lens will be my first lens and I'm not sure when I can buy another lens in future. I'm a amateur hobbyist photographer and normally I didn't print my shots. Mostly I will take scenery and will bring along when I travel overseas for general photography.

because there already is a 15-85 which eats the 17-85 for every single meal. get the latter and you will be wondering "if only i have the former".

for travel, a wide zoom range is always welcomed, to accomodate different situations which you will encounter.

Thanks for advise. 18-200 will be more value for money over 17-85 and 15-85mm? Due to general photography while traveling, should I go for 15-85mm which cover more wide angle?

yes, if you can afford it, get the 15-85 over the rest of the 2.

price wise, the 15-85 and 18-200 should be similar.

but of cause' 18-200 provides more value for money, considering the extra zoom range you will get.

with the extra 3mm at the wide end with 15-85, you are effectively stepping into the ultra-wide angle arena, very useful for landscapes and indoor shooting.

anyhow, 15-85 is built with high quality optics which will not disappoint, unlike the consumer quality 18-200(not that it is bad, just highlighting the difference).

choice is yours~

if you really are not into the tele range, can consider the sigma 17-50 os hsm as well.

with a constant f2.8 aperture, the sigma is significantly faster when zoomed in and it will come in handy when shooting at night.

price is also on par with the 15-85.

Even though I'm not go into tele zoom range, but I think I should have 85mm rather than 50mm which I feel.

there is also the sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 as well, cheaper alternative to 15-85.

Get the 18-200mm which is the most versatile lens there is. Or else a Sigma 18-250mm or a Tamron 18-270mm PZD is good too. The Tamron 18-270 PZD can be have for around S$9XX and is a very sharp and versatile lens, plus it is small and so easy to carry around.

yeah, the 18-200 would be my choice too if i were in your shoes.

it's a good all-in-one kind of lens, suitable for travelling especially when you might need the 200mm reach.
