user opinion on the 20mm 2.8D

I had one of these and used it for a number of weddings and it's really a fun lens which helps you to learn about the basics of wide-angle as it's a "standard" wide-angle between 24mm & 16mm.

It's sharp enough for sure on my D700 but probably will suffer in the corners on a D800. This is a lens with traditional UWA performance... sharp in the centre and gradually less sharp towards the corners. An honest lens. I love it.

thanks for all the feedback :)

but i'm wondering how do u guys usually use your UWA? (up close and personal? or hang back and squeeze everything in)

Usually I go up close with my UWA, to make full use of its perspective distortion

How does it compares to the Voigtlander 20mm f3.5?

very nice to have. one of the lenses i will never sell, even have overlap from 16-35VR.

it is a small and wide prime. very handy for everything.

just make sure the included hood is there. or else, buy from eBay

If you're buying 2nd hand copy ( I'm not so sure if they still sell brand new), make sure that the lens does not have haze problem. It's the rear element ( the glass element behind the aperture blades), that is usually affected by haze. Can not be cleaned so the only option is to replace the element

is this the balsam problem? i find this problem to be common on older lenses. my 35-70 has it but it still takes amazingly sharp photos.

what will the hazing do? affect contrast?

reduce contrast and saturation and increase propensity for flare. also give strange colour casts in some instances. doesnt really affect resolution though so its not noticeable on first instance

Some lenses are prone to this problem. Usually affects a particular element/group of a lens. For your 35-70/2.8, It's the 2nd group ( 2nd from the front )

Thanks for the headsup :)

I do intend to buy 2nd hand sometime this year.

Alas the conundrum of the budget hobbyist that wants to go full frame but has not :bsmilie:

I love this lens. Using it on my D700, bought it brand new from US. Sharp and contrasty. Close focusing works really well to get interesting shots. The f/2.8 zoom lenses cannot compare optically.

Don't enjoy the heavy Vignette on my D700 though. But it sure adds 'taste and feel'. :D

Heavy vignette? Not my experience. Certainly not when you stop down a bit.

Hardly notice vignetting on the following CAM that I owned and fellow kaki CAM D1x, D2x, D200, D300, D70, D80, D90 and D7000 and D3s with wide aperture, not sure about D700, overall I must say a good walk about lens for DX Crop CAM.
