Who is Joseph Kony?

Joseph Kony is the world’s worst war criminal. In 1987 he took over leadership of an existing rebel group and renamed it the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

The LRA has earned a reputation for its cruel and brutal tactics. When Joseph Kony found himself running out of fighters, he started abducting children to be soldiers in his army or “wives” for his officers. The LRA is encouraged to rape, mutilate, and kill civilians–often with blunt weapons.

The LRA is no longer active in northern Uganda (where it originated) but it continues its campaign of violence in Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. In its 26-year history, the LRA has abducted more than 30,000 children and displaced at least 2.1 million people.

What is the goal of KONY 2012?

Invisible Children has been working for 9 years to end Africa’s longest-running armed conflict. U.S. military advisers are currently deployed in Central Africa on a “time-limited” mission to stop Kony and disarm the LRA. If Kony isn’t captured this year, the window will be gone.

We are taking action to ensure these two things:

1) That Joseph Kony is known as the World’s Worst War Criminal.

2) That the U.S. military advisers support the Ugandan Army until Kony has been captured and the LRA has been completely disarmed. They need to follow through all the way and finish what they have started.

Why are we making Joseph Kony “famous”?

Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 campaign aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice. In this case, notoriety translates to public support. If people know about the crimes that Kony has been committing for 26 years, they will unite to stop him.

Secondly, we want Kony to be famous so that when he is stopped, he will be a visible, concrete example of international justice. Then other war criminals will know that their mass atrocities will not go unnoticed or unpunished.

And so what if everyone knows that he is the "World’s Worst War Criminal"? What is going to change from then on?

Didn't the world also just sit by and watch as Kim Il Sun / Kim Jong Il, Pol Pot goes about their daily business for decades. How about the Bosnian and Rwandan genocide?

Yup, follow through with sucking dry all the oil fields in Uganda.

BTW the first ever arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) was for Joseph Kony, and that was five years ago. Trails of war criminals indicted thereafter are still ongoing with some having been released due to bureaucratic and diplomatic red tapes.

Because Kim Jong II or N.korea has it's own power that even Americans fear. Kony on the other hand has abducted and train more than 30000 children, forced them to kill their own parents, friends and people. You think the U.S military's main objective is to collect oil from them? they are human too and i'm sure the Military personnel would do their best to fight and save the children. I suggest you see the whole video , you clearly didn't see the point of this movement.

Look, I can't disagree that using children as soldiers is a bad thing. That said, I don't think anyone should ever think that arresting Joseph Kony, whoever he is, is going to help the situation any. The situation in Africa doesn't arise in a day, nor will it be solved with the removal of any head anywhere. That is just simplistic thinking that refuses to address reality. The real solution of the root of the problem is clear enough for me, and it doesn't involve any arrest of a single person, but rather, international cooperation and will to sort out all the issues in Africa. But of course, it's a task much more colossal than this one. So no one today is going to do it.

It's funny, the Internet today.

Soldier Child (1998) - IMDb

Soldier Child was a documentary film made precisely on this subject. 14 years ago. I remember that there was a recent film (dramatization) on child soldiers called Johnny Mad Dog as well (and I'm sure there have been many)...

I think what 9V Orion is really trying to say is that he doesn't understand why there is a sudden focus on a single person. Certainly what he's done doesn't sit well but surely if everything that the Kony movement sets out to do is achieved, nothing changes for the world. That's just how it is and it can seem a little ridiculous as to why people suddenly try to pay so much attention because there was a viral video on the Internet. Cheers.

The kony movement started in 2008.

It's just that with the recent business with social media ( the up rises in middle east etc ) they decided to use the internet to their advantage.

it's all explained in the video really. thought it was pretty clear. They just want people to know about Kony and to spread the word.

Child soldiers don't result because of single isolated men or leaders. They start because countries are in an utter mess and people like Kony take the opportunities to do what they want, and make the most out of the mess.

I'm tired of viral videos on issues that we all should know well. They almost always have their own agenda, such as promotion of a one-sided view and demonizations. And it's almost sickening how the world seems to suddenly realize that there's been this mess here, and then they start chanting about the wrong thing.

Let's take another cause and put it into perspective. The Kony movement is like saying that Chan, a shark fin trader, has been harvesting sharks' fins since 1987. So the Invisible Sharks started their movement in 2008, and finally made a video showing the writhing dead bodies of sharks and the aftereffects of people seeing the video and finding out what happens to serve up the fins at the table. And the video wants people to know about Chan and to spread the word. What is wrong with that picture is the same thing that's exactly wrong here, if you get my drift.

Anyways, I'm just giving my 2 cents, and I'm done. Cheers.

Tactical force is the only way to stop this madness kony has created. I don't see any other sources that could arrest/stop kony.

Violence begets more violence.

Kony IMO is likened to a hydra. Kill it and nine more appears since the motivation is money and power. In history we have seen how a society could be thrown into turmoil easily in armed conflict. We have also seen just as many examples how nations successfully rebuild itself. Some more successful than others. Armed conflict is never the solution but law and order is but part of the solution. Making everyone a stakeholder in building the nation is part of the solution. Having strong family units is the final piece of the solution. the sag

Education is important, honesty and integrity of leadership is important.

lol.

Why hate on the movement, the group may have had some bad publicity at least they are doing something for the children over there & that is the main point.

I don't see any one of the haters trying to do something about it.

Anyway whatever the case, the video is already spreading pretty fast from the looks of my twitter and fb timeline, so they have prolly achieved what they set out to do with this video.

And you must agree that only armed conflict can stop him, no? Do you think that the resistance army would equip themselves with spears and arrows, charging towards kony's army of 30,000 wielding AK's and RPG's?

What you said can be true, violence creates more violence but in both ways it causes death too. So I would rather see the resistance arm and protect themselves with guns than being helpless with spears and such.

Kony is a terrorist, do you think he will listen to political views? Think not.

He is a terrorist. No doubt and I don't think he will listen to logical persuasion either. My question is what fuels all these mindless acts? Somehow money is figured into the equation. There are socio political and economic tools being or already instituted to deal with illegal trades. Support these policies by avoiding to deal with identified entities that support terrorist or juntas. Will you forgo profit to support anti money laundering? Is this just the governments job? Or it's our part to make the world a better place?

If we do like what the video said, SG will send help to Africa like the US or not? Or send police to come after us for vandalism, sticking all those poster on streets.
