I'm new to using 580EX II on my 550D. I normally bounce flash off the ceiling for my portraits. For catchlight outdoors if I point the flash directly at the subject (toddler) do I still pull out the catchlight panel at 90 degrees, pointing to the sky.Maybe it's a dumb question or is this where the diffuser comes in?

Thanks

well imo, unless you have very strong sunlight, you shouldnt require much flash outdoors.
flash cards are useful to light up the front just a little bit more. but understand that it doesnt do much in sunlight.

It does makes a difference. You just need to know when and how to use it.

The flash should be pointing towards your subject. Or you may consider pulling out bounce card from your 580EX II flash. Also remember to use high speed sync when you in daytime outdoors. If not, you are wasting battery power.

Thanks to everyone except johnjohn82 (lee chuan shin) your sarcasm doesn't discourage me in anyway!

More useful to use a reflector if you want some fill light when shooting outdoors during the day I feel..
