Five of my friends & i responded to a Justin Ng Photography's ad for "Photographers Needed for Chingay 2012 Waterway Parade!"
basically they took our contact and never get back to us other than an SMS reply that they get our SMS.
No transparency in selection, seem like a pure marketing & data-mining for contacts.

‎...i called "97676456" as stated on their website.
asked about it, the bloody guy (to be fair i am not sure whether is "Justin Ng") replied " Anything you email me ah..." then slammed the phone...

anyway, their Open Call Out is here:
Photographers Needed for Chingay 2012 Waterway Parade!
Justin Ng Photography Jobs and Events | Justin Ng Photo

This is what was published by them, in case it get taken down:

There is some sort of reply from their facebook page.

alot of marketing "gimmicks" from him.

look at this:
Thousand Dollar International Photography Competition | Justin Ng Photo

it gone quite viral on facebook. but whether or not if its a true competition. i dun know. nobody knows. only Justin Ng himself knows.

i don't bother.

He has given out $1000 awards many times now... it involves liking his FB page, and getting others to like his FB page to like the pictures so as to vote the winning picture in. It is a very common strategy to drive traffic to a FB page. His is not the only one doing it. Have to give him the credit that he is quite successful in doing what he wanted to achieve.

In the end, he is running a business. People just need to realize that it is a business, and a business primary objective is to make money. Once you understand that, people will not get so worked up. ;)

To be truth,

I NEVER believe in those posts 'Services Wanted', some of them are just fakes.

Many CSers are desperate for quick jobs, and respond to thread without a second thought.

I agree with some of the brothers here. This is not the first time he do this.
Example is the mini race car at jurong. Ask for photographers but not much detail were given.
All bullshit and fakes. I have email to enquire before for the above mention event and chingay 2012.
the reply were just "wait for reply". No more this **** for me... no matter how good he is ...
Lol...
Cheers

What i am disgusted about was that Justin Ng Photography used "Chingay" as a channel to data-mine photography hobbyist who are interested in event photography. No Open selection was done after an open call for registration.
totally disgusted with such commercial entity.

I actually called them up, the guy slammed my phone.
can u imagine, if i leave a msg on their FB, most likely they will just delete it. u think they would reply my email??
i made it clear that i am enquirying about it on behalf of my 5 frenz & my self...they slam my phone....

Really speechless, the best i can think of is to share it here or other to be aware of such fake self promotion...
totally a ripping off of the photography community here.

also as i mention making use of "Chingay" as a bait....total shameless....

Tsk tsk tsk…. so you are the self-proclaimed rep from an interest group who called me up yesterday.

1. Your attitude and tone were totally unacceptable if you're just trying to make an enquiry over the selection process which you claimed is not transparent. Shouting and going non-stop won't help :)
2. Obviously you called me at the wrong time when i'm extremely busy and you did not even have the courtesy to ask if i'm free to talk for a few minutes and you went shouting non-stop.
3. I asked you to email me nicely before i hung up because you're just too impossible to handle at that time and i was engaged in something.

Again, calling names here won't help at all too :) If you're extremely affected by our casting and worry we might mis-use your contact details, you may email me to have your numbers unsubscribed.

That being said, i hope you will engage the right channel as i've suggested to resolve your issue and for your information, we do take defamatory postings seriously.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Lunar New Year and huat all the way :) 和气生财

perhaps you will like to clarify with us the method and process you used to select your photographers?

i'm kinda skeptical. while you may be an award winning photographer, the photographers u hire and field might not be. does chingay know about this fact and whether the participants know?

you sound a lot like a middleman/contractor. perhaps you can share your side here?

To clarify, I'm not the middleman/contractor but rather the main PG responsible for the event. To me, skills are secondary as its important to me to give priority and engage photographers whom i know personally, whom i can trust and last but not least, whom i can manage (i.e: photographers who won't shout at me or call me names when they are just trying to clarify something)

If we are given more passes than we asked for, then we would look into the pool of respondents and carry out our selection process from there.

Till date more than 250 photographers registered themselves, something we did not foresee will happen, for the event but unfortunately we do not have extra passes that were promised previously to carry out the selection process and if we were to do so, it will be transparent. We also assure all respondents that their details will be kept in strictest confidence.

I suppose that "interest group" refers to ClubSNAP and TS claimed to be the rep?

So far i don't see any issue with the organizer. Like bro DD123 said, it's business.

And TS, one thing that you can learn from this is never slam a person, hide facts, as well as mislead members into thinking badly about someone else. You never know if they're reading it or members on the same forum.

And as far as i know, you're making a fool of yourself. Defamation is not a crime but i'm sure there are grounds for a court case here

I asked nicely over the phone on behalf of my group of frenz who signed up.
let not get protective, let talk facts & establish a feedback channel (which u refused via the phone)

1) Could had stated a timeline of selection of how your open call process is in the 1st place.
2) If u had selected the ppl then u should had close the ad on your page.

From a marketing point of view, ppl enquirying about this issue if ppl care & took the effect to find out.
if u shut ppl off, then it will come to the point where ppl would not even bother.

Fair?

my interest group is "My Shooting Kakis" u can search for it in Facebook
it's a small closed group of only 28. other than me there are 5 of us that signed up.
We sometime have outing Via CS.
nothing wrong with me calling up an organizer of something i signed up right?

why threaten with Defamation? when i try to establish a communication?

then may i ask what is the purpose to engage other photographers outside/signup call when u already have your own pool of photographers?

and to double confirm, in your own words "if we were given more passes than we asked for", does it mean you never intended to contact any of the people who answered for the open call?

i am interpreting your words as "i asked for x amount of passes, which i have already a group of photographers that i know", and that you never bothered to ask for more passes, but hoping organiser will voluntarily give more passes.

sounds really fishy to me whether the intended aim of the open call was to allow other photographers to participate.

Please feel free to clarify, thank you

Fair?

Registrations doesn't constitute a guaranteed shoot and we won't shut people off if only they talk to us nicely and show us good telephone etiquette. I DID NOT refused to reveal over the phone and instead i told you i was busy and you did not even asked if i was available to talk and you went shouting non-stop. You're just too impossible for me to handle at that time.

To further clarify, selected photographers from the pool of respondents will only be given the "extra" passes which the Chingay Team is not obliged to give us but we put up the request nonetheless so we could get to know more potential photographers out there but due to unforeseen circumstances and restrictions, extra passes were not given last minute and the list of confirmed photographers were only submitted just last week.

Which I might have to point out that this is not very good for your public relations.

your open call for chingay photography, if i am not mistaken is on last year october, meaning in your very initial plans, you should have already allocated for the "pool of photographers" which u have done an open call, and requested with the initial list of "personal trusted photographers" together, not as a supplement.

also, not getting back, until now, on that no one has been selected from open call is not the most responsible PR management i have seen.

i understand you are probably the owner of the private company, in which case, is not accountable to of the people who signed up. neither can they sue you if we want to.

but i'll say its very badly done publicity.

The pool of photographers for actual day shoot were only confirmed in Jan when we finally received an indication of the number of passes we could get. We asked for extra passes just so we could get as many keen photographers to join us whenever possible and only got to know its not possible last week before we submitted the list as i've said.

If anyone is unhappy over the casting call, do feel free to drop us an email and we will be most glad to assist you in your enquiry. We are also willing to listen to constructive feedbacks just so we can do it better. But we will not certainly not entertain rude calls and take any defamatory remarks/postings seriously.

Sorry but I think you are missing my point. Why is it called "extra passes", when it should be already in the "original number of passes requested"?

Am I right in saying that there was no original intention in allowing photographers from the opencall group and request for the extra passes was only put in much later after the original number of passes?

I need to clarify, because it does sound like very poor planning now, not just PR issues.

Shouldn't it be

opencall decision + close trusted photographers = orginal number of passes

rather than

close trusted photgraphers = original number of passes, further add on a much later request for opencall passes?

Feel free to correct me if i'm mistaken

And also, while im writing this, the team is still trying their best to get us the passes and nothing is confirmed so no further announcements were made. We will definitely keep all respondents posted when we received a firm reply from the team. Till then, please do not speculate and contact us via email or PM if you require further clarifications. Thanks.
