Hi everyone,

greetings, i am new to this club and the photography arena. Allow me to introduce my photography-related background

my first camera was a film-loaded camera (Kodak) which i used with two AA batt..
my second camera was a canon ixus camera which run on Lithium. However, it died when i accidentally dropped on the floor. It does have its limitation of unable to scroll large amount of pictures
my third and present camera is a casio camera which same run on Lithium. It is good, easy to use navigation, slim etc but have its limitation as it is not fast enough when taking picture...sign..this is a dilemna as my camera is still working well..though a bit slow and a problematic when i trying to take photos of my young child, who movement is too fast for my camera..hahaha..

hence, after discussing with my wife, have decided to get a dslr which i am still looking for as i have no knowledge in one..and oso can cultivate as a hobby...

with so many brands a, i am confused myself, what should type of DSLR should i get? am not looking for the high end one, but more for an entry level but a good one but not too low performance that i have to upgrade everytime..any comments? thanks

Best way to know is to go down to Courts or any camera store to physically test the camera.. Each camera will feel different to different individuals and we are not able to advise you which will be the most comfortable.

As for performance.. i believe they are all similar..

I would say Pentax and Sony's entry level's dslr has more bang for the bucks.

Nothing wring with that, buy what you need. I'm perfectly happy with my A900 - I don't shoot video at all.

2nd hand goods... Hmm... Make sure shutter is working. Check all the buttons to make sure they function. Take a photo with several ISO and shutters. Test the focusing if the body runs on AF motor. Make sure LCD is good. Check for dust and fungus on sensor. Make sure rubber grip is good. Hmm... I can't think of anymore. Let others continue. But most importantly, make sure the camera can even shoot a photo properly

DSLR does not it can take your kid's pictures nicely.

What I mean is don't think buying a DSLR, u will take nice pictures of your fast moving kid....

Pls read up on photography techniques and what takes a nice picture of fast moving objects.

There are compact cameras like S95 or 100, Olympus XZ1 or Panasonic LX5 or Fuji X 10 or Sony 5N. These are v capable cameras that can take good pictures of your fast moving kid.

Pls think carefully, read alot and decide on the right camera to buy.

A DSLR is not for taking pictures of yr fast moving kid. And u may regret buying one because of it's weight and bulkiness

Agree with Bro here.... unless you really going into photography.... then go get yourself a DSLR and start shooting and learning.... its a long term investment.... but with good mirrorless system popping up, you may also want to take a look at them and maybe go try out some of them..... may suit your needs better... they are smaller and easier to handle.... many Bro who I know, who know nuts about Camera.... start getting into DSLR because of their new born..... this is normal, we all want to take nice photos of our kid.... but eventually, they find it the learning curve a bit steep and cumbersome to handle and end up with a smaller system.....

They may not perform as well as a DSLR.... I say MAY, so don't shoot me.... :bsmilie::sweat:..... but for kids photo, some mirorless system are good enough/sufficient....

But really, you ask around, most of us will have a Big, Chunky DSLR to shoot serious stuff and either a small P&S or a mirrorless system to "compliment" it when we feel very lazy to lug the monster out of the house or just for some casual shoot....

Haha. Get a dslr. The thing may be bulky and slightly difficult to lug around, but the dslr is capable of a large range of functions. And in the event you decide to take photography to the next level, the bbb virus is readily available for you.

All camera type (be it compact or interchangeable lens system like the DSLR, DSLT, mirrorless, rangefinder such as Leica, etc) can take photos of almost all genre... even fast moving kids... it is how you actually make use of the camera and what techniques you are using. Sure, compact can be more difficult to wield to get similar result as a interchangeable lens systems, but it is not impossible.

But, why stress yourself... if you have the monetary mean, get an interchangeable lens system rather than a compact, for you can get a wide range of application at premium image quality. Many had said that it is the person behind the camera that matter, but the equipment most certainly help. As to which interchangeable lens systems to get... would highly depend on yourself.

Do look into the following,

1) Features that you most wanted (video mode, continuous AF in video mode, Live view, OVF, EVF, etc)
2) Weigh of the camera - DSLR is pretty heavy and bulky (at least the semi-pro ones) as compared to other interchangeable lens systems
3) budget - some cost more, some cost less (so depend on how much you want to spend).

Well... only after getting the above three right, would you know what interchangeable lens system/ systems are you looking at...
