Hi guys. I read the filter thread and just wanna cfm sth. Did my research alr and still abit confused.

A polarizing filter is basically a variable ND filter right? - whoops researched it.

edit: also, what filters are you using, if any at all? landscape in particular

re-edit: ok i see the difference in use. that said, does anyone recommend lee filters GND?

No. Please read again. If you cannot understand, then read other articles online. Google is your friend.

Nope. More like the other way.

You can find on the net many have stacked 2 polarizer to work like a variable ND.

If u got the dough, Lee filter system is the best that you can get, comes with a hefty price tag though.

Cokin. Tianya is a Chinese copy, GND works ok for me. .. Do take note that GND filters come in different stops as well as hard edge and soft edge version.

ok now another thing. CPL or GND? im generally taking landscape for now, and i understand that GND helps landscape as it brings out the contrast in bright things. can a CPL perform as well in landscape?

CPL and GND have totally different uses. They cannot replace each other.

CPL polarizes light. At certain angles, it can reduce glare from water surfaces, plant surfaces, give your sky a more dramatic look if you're shooting 90deg away from the sun. It is also, consequently usually -2stops.
GND stops light at the top/bottom 1/2 of the frame. it can reduce the dynamic range of an extreme scene like a sun set/sun rise etc.
ND filters give will give you the option to use slow shutter speed in broad daylight, resulting in flowy water lines.

Each of these has their own, not limiting to the above, uses.

I personnally don't own or use filters so I'm not that sure of how to get the best effects out of them.

How they perform really depends on what you want. They can't be compared like that.

No, it's the other way around. GND will not affect contrast but the dynamic range of the scene. CPL is able to increase contrast and remove haze, but the effect depends on presence and position of the sun. More reading required

The brand that falls mostly in the middle would be Hitech locally. Cokin is cheap, Tianya is... well... Very affordable..... at the cost of extra work in post processing.
