Help ! - black spots (with roots) found in photos (NIkon D40)

Hi everyone,

Recently, after being with my entry-level Nikon D40 (18-55mm) for quite some time, i realised that all my photos has began to have a small black blurb located at the bottom right of the screen, i wasn't taking much closeup shots recently thus it really didn't hit me that there was one black blurb till it became quite obvious.

I couldn't see any black spots or anything through the hole but it always appear in my pictures, have checked the lens and was quite sure it was not caused by dust on them. Would it be dust on the sensor or perhaps a fungi grow (explaining the black roots spreading over the black spot) ?

This is the first time this happened to me so would appreciate if someone suggest some help and if there is anywhere i can go to fix this or even DIY it myself if possible.

Hmm looks like fungus to me. You can send it to the service centre or to shops like P&G or camera hospital

I'm not sure what it is but if it's fungus then it's best to send to NSC. DIY off the fungus a little crazy for someone with no cleaning experience

Did you shoot with another lens to determine whether it's the sensor or the lens?

@spree 86 Haven got a chance to do so as this is my only lens . >< but definitely will borrow my friend's lens to test again this week.


Anyone have any idea how much it will cost to clear the fungus (if there is) ? finding a more cost-effective way seeing that my 18-55 cost $100 only...

The last time I cleaned at P&G for a very old lens it was $65. Heard the service centre might be cheaper

Maybe some dirt attached on camera sensor? Use camera sensor cleaning (not sure D40 have this function or not)

I have similar problem on my d300s (with the black dot only) and I able to removed or using that function.

Might be dust on sensor, care to share what are the F-stops you used when you took the 3 photos above?

this looks like fungus growing on your sensor, which I don't recommend you DIY, it is better leave it for the professionals.

my guess is you don't use a dry cabinet or have a dry box but did not maintain it for a very long time.
if yes, this is the time to get a dry cabinet, prevention is better then cure

Or may be sensor cracked? Yeah... Sound serious. Either get professional repair or get a new camera. Time to upgrade no?

99% sure it is fungus on the sensor. Send to NSC or 3rd party repair profession to get it cleaned. Good luck.

It does look like fungus in this photograph

I was going to say that it could be hairs, but that looks too suspiciously like something organic instead.

Agree with the others' advice to get it checked out for peace of mind.

You do not keep your camera stored in dry cabinet when not in use?

Have tried using another nikon 18-55 lens to test whether its the lens problem, but the photo ends up with the same black spider thingy on the bottom right.
Guess i shall head down to NSC tomorrow to have my body check hope it isnt to expensive to have it fixed too (t.t)

Anyway i store my camera and lens attached in a camera bag with dry beans inside (those tiny balls that supposedly sucks moisture, inside my closet (not a dry cabinet).

That may not be sufficient. For the long-term, better to get a dry cabinet. Good luck with the problem, hopefully it is just dust and not fungus. Cheers!

Are you sure it was fungus? I thought it would cost more than that..

I guess the fungus was just right outside the sensor filter so no camera dismantling done.

offtopic: the hot chocolate at NSC is pretty damn awesome hope you got to try some

back on topic... look into getting a dry cabinet last i checked challenger in funan sells an analog 30L for pretty cheap
