Planning to go see Angkor Wat in the later part of December this year before the world ends on 21 Dec 2012. :)
Would be either by group tour or free-and-easy. Would appreciate any recommendations from the well-travelled forumers here on the best tour packages for group tours and really good hotels if on free-and-easy.
Thanks in advance. :)

Planning to go next year on a free-and-easy one. Perhaps if you'd like to go Free-and-easy, you may wanna find some cheap accommodation around there?

I recommend Jasmine Lodge for boarding, lots of praises from backpackers. I stayed there when I go F&E in '2006. This Dec I'm going again with my family, but will b a customized group tour.

Thanks for all the advices.
Finally decided to go Free & Easy. Very difficult to get flights during and after X'mas. Eventually managed to book a flight out on X'mas eve on SilkAir but at the higher tiered prices for economy seats. Seems like SilkAir operates like a budget airline with higher and higher prices as the seats get sold out.
Also booked 3 nights at a beautiful 4-star hotel located between Siem Reap and Angkor Wat at their special X'mas offer rate. :)

The last time i heard from my friend who visited Angkor Wat, they have alot of planks for renovation. Wondering how was the condition now?

I certainly hope not the entire temple complex is under renovation. Anyway I will be finding out the hard way in 5 weeks' time. :what:

Yes, free-n-easy is the way to go. If you do not have too many baggages, say just 2 only, you can take a motorbike ride to the hotel to save some $$$. Otherwise, taxi is not to expensive either. Don't get talked into hiring a tut-tut for the whole trip, there are many around from town and the temples and fare is not expensive even if you do a one-way trip. Bargain for the fare and everything else.

Hit the market in town for dinner. Great food and beer at reasonable price - cheap by Singapore standard.

Enjoy.

just came back from Siem Reap last week, some temples are under going restoration works ( not whole temple but part of it).

Is there flooding? I am going in the middle of Dec.

I will be there on Christmas Eve for a 4D3N stay. Hope the temple complex don't close for Christmas. The bad thing about going during the Christmas period is that some hotels (like mine) make it compulsory for the guest to pay for a Christmas Eve Gala Dinner celebration. Sets me back US$40 per head for this.

dont worry, temple will be open. temple pass comes in 1 day ($20), 3day($40) & 7 days. some parts of temple have dress code, if you dont dress well, no entry to that part of it.

Was there last September. Some restoration on the front part of the temple. If you're taking sunrise of Angkor Wat, the yucky blue-green canvas of the constructions can be seen. Hopefully they are done now. Cambodia did flood the last time I went but did not affect the touristy area much. My guide told me via email that they closed the temples for few days after we left Cambodia due to bad flood. Reports were saying the floods in these region are receding now so it should not affect Cambodia much.

Some tips: My guide brought us for temple visit (Bayon, Ta Prom, Banteay Srei) as early as 7am to avoid big crowd. You can have the whole temple to yourself. By the time you're done shooting two hours later, you'll see loads of buses and tourists start swarming in. Now then is the best time to go for a hearty breakfast! ;)

sadly the blue canvas is still at Ang Kor Wat.
