Hi fellow clubsnappers,

Im new into photography and have an interest in landscape. Im currently using D7000 and tokina 11-16. I read up about square filters but was kinda confuse about it. I dont wish to make the wrong choice on purchasing the wrong square filter. It seem complicated as it requires many parts (holder, adapter) but I'm not sure what will make a complete set of square filter? And what brand and what size of square filter would be good enough so that it does not have any color cast or vignetting? And whats the difference between 1 holder and 3 holder? What are their uses ?

Just a point to note. I believe P filter (88mm size I think) will vignette at 11mm for your setup (should be gone by 12mm). But for stacking of filters, it's recommended that you go bigger size. "Z" i think.

it's actually not very complicated.... let me help the best I can:

1: the holder is for holding the square filters in front of the lens
2: the adaptor is for holding the holder.. this adaptor to be screwed onto the lens

you can refer to the illustration here:

the difference between 1 & 3 holder is that the capacity to hold 1 & 3 filters respectively. For 3 holder, you can stack 3 filters alongside at the same time.

Wow thanks for all the prompt reply. But there are certain brand that dont have a bigger size to prevent vignetting and color cast. So which brand would be better and what size should I use to obtain optimal results ?

These links give you an idea of what may be needed for landscape:

Do a search. There are many articles on the net on the use of square filters...

Looks similar... LOL.

TS, Here is some information on filters and how to use them. Please read and watch the videos.

Know exactly what they do before you jump into and buy them.

For Tokina 11-16 on D7000, if you use the Cokin P series sized filters 85mm width, you will definitely get vignetting at the widest end. This happens even if you use the single slot wide angle holder.

I will recommend you go for the 100mm wide filter holder and filters. Holders in this size is Cokin Z-pro, Lee foundation kit, and Hitech 100mm. There are some China made 3rd party holders now on the market. You can check out mass sales, or a store at the top floor of Sim Lim Sq.

As for filters, you will run into some color casts. The key is to minimize it. I find Hitech filters to be best balance between cost and performance and use them personally. I buy them all from TK Foto. You can find the pricelist here.

If you have any other questions on specific brands or recommendations feel free to ask me.

hi guys,

i have a canon 400D (1.6 crop!!) and 11-16 f2.8 tokina too :)

would be going overseas to shoot landscapes.

im considering buying rs-60e3 or rc6 (remote release) to exposures longer than 30 seconds (bulb mode).

im also considering buying 77mm hoya HMC (economical) uv screw-on round filter for protection. when required, i would like to use ND or GND filters...

should i get ND512, ND1024, or/and get the whole square filter system for GND?

If i were to get the square filter system, can i leave the uv round filter on whilst using the square filters?

should i get 100mm system or 85mm (for UWA, Cokin calls it) system? i would like to shoot at 11mm. what brands are recommended, besides Cokin, Lee and Singha, that would have 100mm and nd512, nd1024 filters? (according to the price lists, i can't find any prices for these 9-10 stop nd filters)

thanks lots! and sorry for the many questions!

cheers!

Hi Daredevil, for my setup 1.6x crop body with an 17mm widest (so effectively will be 27mm, not so wide anymore), should I get a 84x110 or 100x150 Hitech filter?

Planning to upgrade to full frame later on, so widest in future will be 16 or 17mm. For the 17mm should I buy 84x110 or 100x150 Hitech filter? Thanks for help!

If you planning to go Full frame later, there's no doubt you should go for 100mm filters.

Sorry double post as previous, internet line not good...

Hi,

For LEE filters users, is it normal to have scratches on the edge of filter after slot in (1 line per side)? I'm using LEE holder and LEE soft ND grad, as long as is not scratches on the front then it should be fine right?

Also, anyone use the 105 adaptor with the LEE setup has any comment on it? I'm happy with 77mm cpl but not convenient to work with LEE setup.
Just want to find out more as the 105mm cpl cost a bomb (LEE, B+W).

Am looking for Hitech Standard ND filter set but TK short of 0.3, though I think I will use 0.6 and 0.9 more.

Many thanks.

Yes it is normal. Don't freak out. Even if there are scratches on the front, it won't show in your pics.

Hi

I intend to get the square filters for landscape shot but not sure where i should start. Currently using a Tokina 11-16

Can I actually get (a adaptor ring from hi tech, and a wide angle filter holder from lee and use the lee filters) or (adaptor ring and holder from hi tech and use lee filters). Can I use these products together ?

Many thanks

Hitech adapter ring will only fit Hitech holder.
Lee adapter ring will only fit Lee holder.

Filters are different story, they are pretty standard at 85mm width and 100mm width being the most popular. As long as the width is the same the filters will fit.

any possible 3rd party holders? seems like there are none at the moment... and the lee/hitech/cokin Zpro are too expensive

so for a 11-16 tokina. if i want to shoot at 11mm wide with no vignetting , should i get 100mm or 85mm filter ? and can I stack with with my B+w 77mm UV MRC nano filter ?
