i want to get one of these. the technology is just amazing, take the photo, then re-focus anywhere after the shot.

Game changer alright but give it a year for them to get V2 ready. This initial release is at most a proof that they can put a production version up for sale. Not all that useful right now.
video recording with this would be very useful, specially for forensic purposes (reviewing surveillance videos).

Yes there is. Surveillance is one of the good use. Reporters that work in chaotic circumstances will appreciate it. You don't even need to focus, just aim at general direction and shoot. For those fast pace scenes or low light scenes where out of focus is very common, such techique helps to recover some good take, but slightly out of focus. I say fast pace, not fast speed. Fast pace where you need to snap and move on, like during a reportage where the subject enter the scene and out of the scene quickly type. It's so easy to get out of focus when the subject is moving fast.
Obviously we shouldn't expect much from the first product, it's probably just testing the market first, introducing as a gadget more than for great purpose. I rather this technology be bought over by the renown camera manufacturers so that existing photographers can benefit from the union of good lens making with good sensor technology.
It's still early to see this technology supersede existing photography technology, but who knows ? Technology is moving faster and faster as we observe.

But don't forget to check out the Terms of Use. A couple of the legal bits are potentially an issue to me (emphasis is mine):
"Modifications, derivative works and printing for non-personal use (for example, commercial or political) require our explicit prior consent."
"Unlisted pictures can be viewed and shared by the user who uploaded them and by others who know the link to the pictures"
"but only by using our light field picture player or another player approved by us."
"Display the Lytro trademark with such content."
These are some pretty harsh restrictions!
