Hi, anybody know anything about Satellite Phones? Planning a trip to Antarctica and was thinking of getting one. From what I've read so far it looks like I have to narrow down to the Iridium network in order to get coverage. Anybody have any experience with buying or renting a set?

You are absolutely right that only Iridium Communications provide mobile communication coverage over the entire Antarctica continent as the 66 active satellites in their constellation are inclined at a polar orbit of ~ 86.5° to the equator of the earth. IIRC, Inmarsat also provide such services over the Southern Ocean but due to the geostationary nature of its satellite constellation, only limited terrestrial regions such as those in the Antarctic Peninsula may be within direct line of sight to either one of their three I-4 satellites.

Several shops in Sim Lim Square and Sim Lim Tower are renting or selling satellite phones so you may wish to check with them for more details. The Iridium 9555 satellite phone is available over at one of SingTel appointed partner. Contacts are as follows...
