For me, a fast 50mm is a must. A F2.8 standard zoom is a must also. And a good UWA too. 85mm or 70-200/2.8 (select one)

what do you want to shoot and what do you want your images to say first ?

+1 to that.

If not, the 'essential' lens will be just a white elephant in the dry cabinet.

I had always have my 50mm with me but have been thinking to get a 24-70mm which will kinda of make the 50mm (which is a f/1.4 AIs) redundant for travel. I think my future set up will comprise of 20mm, 24-70mm (akan datan) and 80-200mm.

For me,

1) F1.4 prime lens (either 35mm/50mm/85mm)
2) ultra wide angle lens
3) zoom lens (for general situations)

If you are into architecture and landscape, a 12-24 or tilt-shift lens.
If you are into Safari and wildlife, a 600mm lens
If you are into portraiture, a 50/85/135mm lens
If you are into portraiture and action, a 70-200 f/2.8
etc etc etc

Your own focus and style will naturally already lead to an answer to your question. There is no such thing as "die die must get this lens no matter what you shoot".

For me the 28-85mm a 'general purpose mg' so to speak back by 100mm & 200mm primes.

Just one.

35mm F2.8 cheap and good.

30 f/1.4
15-85 (still hoping that one day they will release a f/2.8 version)

I really want the 50mm f0.95/1 and and a heliar 15mm.

Been shooting with a similar set up e.g. 50mm + 16mm. Really wouldn't mind adding a 24/35mm.

is 35mm 1.8 consider fast?

- u need a macro lens
- u need a landscape lens
- u need a protrait lens
- u need a street shoot lens
- and the list goes on.

the above applies if that area is your interest of shoot.
