Will it work without a tripod? I faced a dilemma of whether to smuggle the camera & lens into the show as the picture taken will be usability due to no tripod.

Of course the lens will work. There is no magical switch on the lens that says "do not work without tripod".
But if you're asking if your shots will come out ok, that depends entirely on your skill. Plus it's a pretty obvious lens in a crowd, you'll get caught easily.

impossible. the weight + lowlight condition + shaky hands = blurred photos most likely. u need a monopod at least.
Disagree. Proper holding techniques or using your knee/lower arm+knee as an impromptu tripod will work. I've tried it with my 70-400 before.

I just hope to preserve some memories for my child. The last time I took him to see Disney on Ice and used HS10 to take, 95% of photo blurred. Luckily, I realized the internet already have a lot of good Disney on Ice photo available for download.
But this time, I googled Mickey Live Festival and cannot find any photo on it. So thought of bringing the lens to take myself.
And curious what will they do if they caught me? Will they throw me out of the show?

cos this lens max aperture is only 5.6... if the hall light condition is not good, means he had to shoot f5.6 with very high ISO thru out the performance to avoid handshake problems from lower ISO (especially if handheld).

Mine is also f/5.6 at 400mm mah... Use centre-weighted metering, ISO 800, maybe 1600. All ok.

Aiyo TS, you're like lost sia. Any lens will work, depending on your shooting style. But frankly speaking, from what I see from your pics, I highly doubt that you can hand-hold the 400L, even at it's widest aperture.
I strongly suggest you not anyhow purchase your lenses, unless you have much dough to spare which I feel you can better use it on your son. Prime lenses are not everyone's cup of tea. Worse of all, the one you are looking at is a super tele 400mm. How much in the future do you think you will use this lens? Annually for every mickey show? that is certainly not cost effective. I rather you rent the lens instead, in this way you get the pics you want plus it does not cost you much.
If you really want to spend the cash, I rather you splash it on the tamron 70-300 vc usd. Really good lens for those on budget.

Bro. Sony had built in image stabilizer, so even if your lens came without any stabilizer, you can still achieve more or less stable shots at high ISO, and reasonable speed. Plus I believe your skills and techniques are way above many of us (me at least). I don't think TS is using a Sony or Pentax, so kind of difficult.
Plus if you looked at TS post, he had tried using a PnS before but 95% of the shots came out blurry, I think it would be very very difficult for him to handle telelens without any form of stabilizers.
And my suggestion to TS, would be... don't take photos, don't break the rules (it was like, people say cannot record movie in a movie theatre and you still try to smuggle your webcam or video recorder into the theatre and record it). If they say no... then no. I believe sooner or later photos or movies will be shown in the internet.

TS, which scenario do you think the both of you will enjoy more?
a) You spend $ to buy the tix. You spend a lot of time 'sneakily' trying to capture some shots of the performances on the stage.
b) You spend $ to buy the tix. You spend the evening with your kid, laughing away and generally having a good time.
For me. If its against the rules to bring in any photography materials then i wont do it. Trying to smuggle it or smoke through can be very troublesome and worst if got into any trouble. Furthermore since ive already paid so much money for the ticket.
I will wish to watch and enjoy the show more than spending half the time toggling around with my camera trying to get some picture. + I think its better i spend a good time with my kids. I know its good to capture/record good moment but i also feel that.. not everything have to be capture. If really need to. I will just take a photo of the tickets and a picture of the entrance. Thats it. Lastly, Hope you had a great time and enjoy the show !

Not to forget... TS... by breaking the rules... you are setting very very bad example for your kid. So you be the judge, what do you want, to finally succeeded in getting the pics you want, but on the other hand, teach something really bad to your kid... don't forget kids are like a piece of white paper, you can show him/her value of life, to be a good person, to be lawful. Or you can tell him/she that him/she can get away with everything as long as him/she was not caught by the authority.
