Hi guys,

Need some advice from you. I am considering to get a budget carbon fibre tripod for my trip. Budget $300 and preferably under. My heaviest set up is only Canon 60D no grip with 70-200L f4. Hence I dont need tripod which can support heavy weights. Factors: Stable, light weight, small when retracted.
(important as I carry a ton of things while going for ovoersea trips)

Did some research and found that SiRui N1204 has quite good reviews. Was wondering if there is any other alternative.

being not well-versed in tripods, please let me know if my budget is not feasible.

Many thanks for the gurus help.

Priorities in which order?

How light weight and small you want it to be?

1) Cheap and Light, not Strong
2) Cheap and Strong, not Light
3) Strong and Light, not CHEAP

:)
If the tripod folds small, it may not be tall enough for you to use it comfortably... I see most people end up with a couple of tripods. 1 for travel and another bigger and more sturdy for frequent use.

The N1204 has a monopod which you might not need. So, you consider T1204X.

Sirui is a good choice, Benro too, so is Manfrotto and Gitzo (the latter two might not meet your budget though). It is best you take your equipment to the shop and test it up.

Note that for Sirui, you can find them in TK. For Benro you will have to go to Benphoto (I believe it is in Penisula Singapore).

Sirui can be found in song brothers at fun an at well but i suggest going to TK as you can feel for the tripods yourself and test it out as well as seek help from the pile there for advices. Bringing your equipment there to test is one thing (knowing how heavy your set up is related to the tripod) but you also have to consider the purpose of you buying the tripod (if you using for seascapes/landscapes) bringing the tripod into the wilderness, waters, swamps then you have to consider the ergonomics of the tripod as well.

Years back, I did a calculation.
I must state, it is a "on-paper" calculation based on all the weight info I can find online.

DSC_9238_1.jpg

The setup consists of
Nikon D200 - Weighs 830g
MB-D200 - Weighs 230g
EN-EL3e x 2 - Weighs 80g each => 80g x 2 = 160g
AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED - Weights 1470g
Teleconverter TC-17E II - Weighs 250g
SB-800 - Weighs 350g
4x Sony Ni-MH Batteries for SB800 - Weighs about 25g each = 100g.

Total weight of this configuration : 3390g Approximate 3.4kg.
So if you do a round up, the max should be 4kg to 5kg.

i think u bring ur set up to TK foto or whichever photo shop n try out the tripod
nothing beats the real thing...i was reading on tripod for a few months finally i decided to go tk foto to finally try

initial plan was to get t1004x w g20, end up i got r1004 w g10, because i finally felt the real thing n i made my choice right on the spot, tk foto service is really good, 1 of the uncle there answered all my questions patiently, even when i requested to see different ballhead he showed me w no complaints

im very happy w my purchase n the service

Small, light, stable. thanks bros! I would need a reasonable ht of around 1.3 to 1.4m.. standard ht.

Ahh... I'm not aware of the exisitance of T1204X.. Thanks

Thanks for the reference!

Point taken, taken, I rarely take photo in wildness.. Thanks a lot for the pointers that I should be looking out for.

i'll tell you it is very short.

since your 1st priority is small, you cannot expect it to be big at the same time.

You might like to check out the Fotopro C-5c carbon fibre tripod. It was selling at $290 at Comex, not sure what's the price now, but the shop might extend the promotion if you get it today. See this thread. You can give Artworkfoto a call to find out the price.

Haha, I was at comex yesterday hunting but didnt see this. I see you bought your own poison as well haha.. How's going for this babe?

will drop down tomorrow to check it out, thanks bro.

So far so good, I'm pretty happy with it. I actually already have a Gitzo 2228 Explorer, but although it is very sturdy I find it a little too heavy for travel, so the C-5c fits the bill very well. And no worries brother, you're most welcome. :)

You may consider Benro's Travel Angel.

I use Manfrotto 732CY for travelling. Just under 1kg, compact. Only issue is that it rated to 3.5kg load. Perfect little tripod to carry around :). doesnt have perks like travel bag nor ballhead like the other brands do though...

Can try Jusino tripods too(= Not expensive. 300 around there shld be able to get carbon fibre. comes with those 5section, can be changed into a monopod. super light! Saw them at Red Dot Photo Booth during comex. maybe u can ask them if they still have it(=
