1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Composition, depth of field, overall feeling
2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
To bring out the colour the flower, especially how the yellow spreads from the centre.
3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
in a sunny afternoon, in chinese garden; no post processing.
4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture?
The composition can be improved. And lighting... without a flash, can we do any creative effect with natural light?

It doesn't really brings out the colour of the flower as it kind of blend in with the background. The DoF is harsh and distracting, took me quite awhile to find the flower. Personally i feel that you should go in and take the shot rather than having more blurred background than the actual subject.

Personally feel that the background is a bit distracting. But then again, this is subjective. I quite like it on the other hand after staring at it for a while, and trying to imagine it as a framed shot in an art museum. Don't take my comments too seriously. If you are a well known photographer and you give a meaningful explaination to this photo, this can become a prize winning shot!

Frankly, that is not true.

you could also try to use some post processing to bring out the subject more, e.g. by darkening the background. this will help to reduce the distraction the background, as well as giving the frangipani a more 3D feel.
