What's a decent 100mm lens for Film SLR?

I was shooting with my Super A recently and had with me the 43mm and the 135mm. Quite a few times, i get the feeling that if i had something in the middle of that FL range it would have helped me capture a few more shots. I intend to get a 77mm one day (funds permitting) but was wondering if i could get any recommendations for a fairly good value-for-money 100mm lens?

As it's film i will need the aperture ring (cos i intend to use it for other film SLRs apart from Super A) so D-FA 100mm Macro WR is not in my consideration.

I'd also like a F2.8, so which would be a good one to get for, say, up to $500?

Sigma 105mm and Tamron 90mm macro lenses? Used my Tamron 90 on film SLR before with good results. The nice fat focusing rings on these lenses definitely helps

i've considered those. whilst the Tamron 90mm suits the budget, it is abit close to a 77mm. and Sigma the 105mm is quite abit more expensive isn't it?

The sigma is selling for $616 at SLR revo...my view is that if you are looking to buy FA77..then maybe should save up abit more then get the FA77..unless you feel that you need the macro function of the 2 lenses..

What's wrong with it being close to 77mm? When you get the FA77 then you can either relegate that lens to macro duties (if that interests you) or sell it off to fund the FA77, and the change in focal length will be less significant. I'm not sure why this is a reason to pick one lens over the other. Furthermore, IMO the difference of ~10mm is less significant at that range of focal lengths than you think.

Anyway what I think is that if you really want a FA77, you should just keep saving up till you can afford one (new or used) and be a happy man. No point settling for halfway

i agree... the quest for 77 will therefore continue and i will at last have the Three Amigos!

K 85f1.8, M 85f2, A 100f2.8.

Tamron SP 90 f2.8 macro. with the AF limiter it can double as a portrait lens. and the macro is good...
cheap too..... double thumb up...

In summary:

The sensible amongst you have suggested the Tamron being good value for money and quite rightly pointed out that it will not be redundant after getting the legendary 77Ltd. That makes alot of sense (altho i dun see myself as a Macro kinda shooter).

Oceanpriest had suggested that i try something which is quite close to what i alreeady have which is the SuperTak 85 1.9. To save money i should take that out with me... i noticed that one you have an adaptor already on, it's no less convenient changin lenses than a K-mount lens.

Anthony, thanks for the suggestions too. I have thought about the K, M or A versions, but the 100mm aren't so easy to come by on B&S. Would be nice to have one though and that was probably what i had at the back of my mind too (form factor agrees with me more too, match camera body and lens vintage-for-vintage).

Well, in any case, i shall, as suggested earlier, save up for a 77Ltd and find out if it's just as magical as i hear it is
