Upgrading from e-pl1 to dslr?

Hi.. I have been thinking of upgrading. I have the kit zoom lens, pancake and Helios MF lens. Been looking for fast zoom lens or prime and think the price is hi! As size is no longer a concern, I wondered if TCO of dslr is lower given cheaper AF lens and wider range. I am not keen on MF.

And I am confused whether AF lens for pentax, canon and nikon are interchangeable. And read somewhere that old lens can't be used on some models?? I see adverts of used 50mm F1.x lens for <$100. are these MF?

You can get brighter zoom and primes for dslr at a lower price. Popular ones will be the tamron zooms and sigma primes. However, just that lens itself will be much heavier than a m4/3 with lens.

Lens for different brand have different mount, not interchangable. 50mm f/1.8 at $100+ does have af. 50mm f/1.4 is usually in the $500+ region.

Haha we are all newbies! so can tamron zooms and sigma primes used for any brand? Ah.. Then based on price alone, it doesn't make sense to pay 1k for another fast zoom lens and my TCO will be >2k and I think dslr can provide better quality

Yes and No...Tamron and Sigma manufacture lens for different lens mount systems. But if you get one for a Brand (e.g. Canon), you cannot fit it on a Nikon or Pentax unless there is some sort of adapter to convert the mount type. But normally by doing so, you will lose AF functionality

That depends on what lens you are looking at...Sigma 30 f/1.4 is a fast prime at ~$700 and Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is ~$600??++
