Day trip to Pontian, Johor - Memories of a Bygone Era (October 22)

I spent part of my childhood in the town of Pontian, Johor. While I have returned there many times since, I never did so with a photographic eye. I hope to do so this time, and I'm inviting fellow CSers to go with me.

Singapore has progressed tremendously infrastructure-wise in the last 30 years, but Pontian seems to have stood still in time and looks not much different than it did in the 1970s. I am hoping this day trip will allow us to capture some of that and contrast it with how some parts of Singapore look today.

Since I don't have private transportation, unless some kind soul is willing to drive us around, this trip will rely solely on public transportation (read: buses). Feel free to post questions on this thread. Below are the details:

When:

October 22, 2011 (Saturday).
Meet near Woodlands MRT Control Station at 7:00 AM (Don't worry, you can nap on the bus later :))

Where:

Pontian, Johor.

What to bring:

Passport.
Malaysian Ringgit (change before actual day, bare minimum RM30, better RM50 or more).
CEPAS card for taking Singapore buses.
Camera body, plus 1-2 lenses. I recommend a light setup for this trip due to possible congestion at the customs and on the buses. I suggest leaving flashguns and tripods at home.

What to wear:

Light clothing. I suggest jeans or bermuda shorts, and comfortable shoes. Avoid skirts or slippers, and definitely no high-heels.

Thanks for the suggestion, but probably can't squeeze in Batu Pahat as a day trip together with Pontian. However, if any CSers can tell us if Batu Pahat is worth a day trip of its own, then perhaps someone can organise a trip there?

EDIT: I see what you mean by 'jio'. Pardon my rusty Hokkien. Okay I dunno who is he, but if anyone does, can ask if he wants to go Pontian and meet up with us?

Might I suggest hiring a mini van for the day. More convenient especially when everyone is tired at the end of the day. It can take max of 11 persons.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am currently in the United States and won't be in Singapore until about 10 days before this trip, so a little hard for me to arrange. Anyone got lobang? Will this be a Singapore or Malaysian van? Will it pick up and drop off in SG or JB?

One thing I didn't mention much is an itinerary. I tend to take the take-it-as-it-come, free-and-easy approach. I do have a few ideas in mind and I welcome other's input on this.

Shoot locations:

1. Seaside next to bus terminal.
2. Shop house, school, and other buildings. (I was told there was a fire years ago on one street and I seem to remember there are some building ruins that we may take interest in - don't call me out on this one though)
3. Fishing boats.
4. Kukup - which is a taxi ride away from downtown Pontian Kechil where we 'land'. We may go only if we have time.
5, There is also a big development project on reclaimed land, but I'm not sure how accessible it is.

Also, there has been some suggestions on taking taxis and perhaps hiring a van. So I guess I should suggest that you bring more Malaysian Ringgit than RM30. Plan on RM60 or more, just in case.

Excellent, Joanne, perhaps you will have much better ideas on what to shoot :)
And with that, the list is FULL. I will start a reserve list in case anyone cannot make it at the last minute.

sfoto100: We will keep your allergy in mind but please feel free to remind us if we get carried away when ordering food. :)

u are the leader, we follow suit :p btw, how's street shooting for potian like? is there people there camera friendly or they tends to be more caution at cameras pointing at them? so i can plan what i will shoot at potian (either street shoot or landscape).

Hi neech, I like to offer my help given that you are at overseas.
I reside at JB, been to kukup few times. Will meet you guy at larkin on that day and I will be driving.

Hi, I am interested in joining you guys for shooting Pontian.
I intend to drive there, but mine is a hatchback and can only seat up to 4 passengers.
