NDP firework ( first noob shot)

Hi all,

1. in what area is critique to be sought?
Composition, focus and sharp

2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
to achieve to take more beautiful fireworks at NDP

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
I went down to Esplanade to take first time firework

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
Still need to improve, the firework is not well composite and no building or interest

You said it right there... There is no feeling of "Location" here.

In cases like this, where fireworks are really the expression of celebration, I tend to prefer to make them the background rather than the subject. Instead, is there a celebration/ jubilant person (maybe dressed in our national colours and with face painted as well) that you can make the focus of your shot, with the fireworks in the background?

If a person is not around that's fine, can you put our national flower the orchid in the foreground, with some iconic buildings (eg. Merlion) and maybe fireworks in the background? (to scream 'Singapore').

Think about how you can add other elements that are related to what you want to shoot, and add them so the eye can travel between parts of the image.

adding on to that, one interesting perspective you can take next time is portraits! (yes NDP 2011 is a good time to try this from what i observed).

trying to fit where the fireworks came out from (i.e. the firing platform) also gives more depth to the picture instead of just a "portrait shot" of the fireworks itself. for good locations to try again i'd suggest you look around in the other sections of this forum for good recommendations from the other CSers, if not ill OT too much here.

im not gonna hijack ur thread for my own pics, but this is an (fairly decent i hope) example of how including even a severely underexposed background can do to your picture =]

Good job for first fireworks
You are taking only the fireworks, as you had already mentioned, there no foreground to depict the whole picture on where and what was being taken inside. Try not to zoom and chase the fireworks if u did . setup at a location and predict the spread of fireworks and patiently wait for the one you want without changing the view point unless the spread is out of your view finder...
To accelerate saving and taking more picture, dun use RAW setting, save in Large Jpeg, toward the end of the fireworks where the fireworks are more intense, Set your aperture to F16 or F22 as more light will over expose your picture and usually toward the end, it already too smoky to take and i will watch the fireworks then taking it. focus on the early part of fireworks ....

it can be better with some background of location. Well thats the hard part to expose both correctly
