Good day dear seniors!

Well,I'm a newbie and recently got myself a canon 50mm f1.8..I notice only at a certain "distance" then the pictures will be nice with an awesome bokeh...

Is it true of that "distance"??

And how can I fully utiliZe my 50mm 1.8???

Appreciate all the help received!

in very simplified terms, it's the large aperture that gives you the pleasant bokeh. Distance does play a part in blurring out the background (out of focus).

Mount it on the camera, shoot more. Unless your definition of utilize is to make it a paperweight

Like..i gotta move back to a certain distance, probably about 30 cm or less away from the object for it to be in focus.

Cos I tried taking some photos of a ring or something and got too close. The camera can't focus in that range, until I moved back to that "distance" then it is able to focus properly.

Sorry for dumb question..I really dun understand the things that's why..sorry

I think you are referring to the min focus distance (mfd)? it's 45cm away from the subject. (in short) You can't focus anything <45cm

Thanks for all your help!! Really appreciate!!

Anyways would it be wise to use the 50mm 1.8 for a dance event? My friend kinda asked me to take some pictures of him.. Lol

If in a concert hall, If you are standing right to the stage, sure...If you are seated in the mid row of the hall, don't bother...you need a much longer lens (probably >100mm to 200mm? maybe even longer) preferably with large aperture which normally will burn a hole in the pocket.

Ah I think it's a community club? So should be able to take closer..

How bout using my kit lens? The 18-55mm..haha !!

The kit lens should be a better choice if you are not exactly sure of the distance away from the subject. Of course low light indoor performance will be poor. Maybe can consider a flash. Why not bring kit and prime and try out before the event? :)

its better to use external flash with 18-55

if not 50mm in low light is better...

Agreed...TS, please also make sure you can use flash when the event is ongoing...to what I've read, sometimes flash is not allowed. then you will have no choice but to bump up ISO or use the 50mm (and/or run from spot to spot..to "zoom")

I see I see...
Thank you dear seniors...

I'm an old newbie to DSLR. Hehe! My best advice is to take your gear out and practice more before the event. Dance event should be under low light (assume indoor) and has a lot of movement, not the easiest I say. Maybe you can start by taking photographs of moving subjects like children and indoor sports, then you should be a little more ready for it :)

Best you take your camera and your friend out, go to the CC, check if your kit lens can handle it. We're all just guessing here. Educated guess, but still guesses since we don't know how far you will be from your friend.

Got a confirmation of the location..it's in a secondary school hall..

Think I'll just go and try it out see if I get any nice pictures or not haha..
Thanks for all your help!

Best to also plan where you will position yourself during the event. Your lens selection (if you have other lens or need to rent) may vary depending on where you stand too.
