Hi all just want to check is there any device that allow me to back up my photos from memory card directly to portable harddisk without using computer? Thanks.

With the current price of memory cards, I will just bring more cards, no moving parts and sometimes can even survive being cleaned in the washing machine. Not forgetting small, light and don't need batteries.

Saw it once in Funan DigitaLife Mall, it resembles a 1G Game Boy (PSP of the '90s) size handheld card reader with LCD panel and cost a bomb.

Not too sure about the brand and model though. Did I also say it cost a bomb?

Yes, there are many, and they have been discussed to death numerous times. Do a search for "portable storage" or "portable harddisk".

But I do agree... Why not just bring more memory cards instead? Smaller too.

What I mean is to back up 1 more copy from the memory card, just in case I lost the card or the card become faulty during travel... Then I will not lost all my foto..

Ah. This makes sense. And this is, in my humble opinion, one of the main reasons why one would choose to have a portable hard disk device to directly transfer your photos from the cards to the HDD as a backup copy.

Yes.... There are many such available. You can look around Funan and Sim Lim for them.

U mean something like this?

Last time I asked, the device itself costs about $300++ without any HDD included.
That just happened to be one that I was referring to. Thanks for link BTW, was trying to search for it. :)

With that price, I rather purchase a low-end netbook or tablet and connect a external HDD to it.

A search on "portable harddisk" might not have what TS want. Its called OTG storage bank. There are some cheaper ones that uses IDE harddisk and cost ONLY $50+.

Loads, Epson has one, Vosonic carries a few.

Not cheap for the reliable brands. Of course, the China brands are cheap, but might not last.

buy a new camera with dual memory card slots

Wow.. This would be the most expensive solution..
Is d800 or d400 come with dual slot? Ha ha..

Sorry to dig up old thread. What about tablets such as ipad or Galaxy Tab ? Anybody uses these as portable storage media ?

If you already have the iPad, perhaps you can consider the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Allows you to transfer your photos from your SD card or camera. Cost $38, cheaper than another harddisk. Supports jpg and raw. But of course that's assuming you have you iPad with you when you travel or on the move.

There are many on the market but are usually slower in transfer. The two I can think of that are pretty much cited by many photog are Nexto and Hyperdrive. Else bring along a smaller laptop along with a usb portable harddisk to connect. Can surf net as well :)
