Hi everyone. I am getting started on photography and would like to buy a d40 from a friend of mine. She is selling the body with 2 lenses. The 2 lenses are : nikon 18 -55 mm dx and 18 - 105 mm vr at $500. Is it a good deal?

depends on you actually.

according to BnS, d40 body alone is about $350 and the 18-105 is about $250.

for $500, sounds affordable to get started with DSLR.

After buying from your friend, you can sell the 18-55mm lens, for $80? Then your cash outlay is only $420.

hmm its actually up to you (ts)...

if you are really into photography, why not top up abit more? for newer model? like 3100 or 5100 and it might last you
longer? hmm. you can get a 2nd 3100 in BnS for like less 650? +/- with kit lens (18-55) or if you want 18-105, u can
sell your 18-55 and top up (maybe $130+/-) for a 18-105?

if im not wrong d40 is actually quite an old model.

well in the end its still up to you =D..

I believe the D40 is only around 300 only. And you really only need one of the 2 lenses. 18-55 should cost around 80-100 and 18-105 around 250.

Yes, but got to have patience wait for such deals to float along, means checking out BnS often.

D40 - 300
18-105 - 250
Total - 550 value

Sell the 18-55 - get back 80
Total cost - 420
Total savings - 130

Not bad what!

Thank you everyone. That is great insights. I just started this hobby and i want to learn from scratch before investing into higher end investment

That's a prudent approach.
People on the opposite end of the spectrum believe in 'one time pain' to the wallet when starting out, as opposed to continually 'upgrading' :)
I would shortlist the latest cameras that are within my budget, and go from there.

Not a bad deal. I sold my D40x with 18-55 back in early 2009 for 550. Maybe I sold too cheap. LOL.

But do note you can buy a brand new D3000 with 18-55vr for 600+ nowadays. Check out groupon.
