anyone use this set up for portrait? (esp. close up shoots) can advice if it is effective to produce bright but soft effect on the subject? (better than the ring flash?) thx!

how close is close? I use it for macro so my close is almost at minimum focusing distance on my 105mm micro AFD, which is around 0.3m

thx for your reply. i need to use it mostly for portrait (closeup head shot, half body), or food, watches, toys etc, may be around 0.3m-3m between flash and subject. i wondering if its light (2 sb r200) is strong enough to reach that distance and at the sametime provide a 'soft look' on the subject. is it worth the 800 price tag (without su800)? or i should use a ring flash instead for better results. btw, i don't have a macro lens yet, so i'll be using it on a 24-70 f2.8.

not tried it yet, but i were to be shooting i would use my SB800 as commander and at the same time as main light bounced from the ceiling
the 2 SBR200 will be for fill and catchlights, i can test on food watches and toys for you
and see if i can find a subject to test portraits this weekend, give me some time
btw reflectors will also come in very useful
eg. SB800 is ceiling bounced
subject sitting on chair holding a reflector to fill in the shadows
SBR200 is mainly as catchlights
or actually with the bounce card of the SB800 up slightly it will also create catchlights
Works really great at macro distances and with the full close up attachments, works like multiple flashes when the camera to subject distance increases, you will need to know how to control the light if you intend to use. Will try more
