Hi All,
My EFS 18-55mm IS (Kit Lens) is unable to autofocus in only ONE direction. As long as i rotate the focusing ring all the way clockwise, the lens is able to autofocus in the anticlockwise direction. But does not autofocus in the opposite direction. Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix it?

Seems like some issue with the focus motor. You might want to get it checked at CSC.

if still under warranty, sent it to the Canon Service Centre to have it checked. Or else there's a member here providing a great service that does lens check/repair. CS nick is "fatique"

Thank you photoart.

This problem is quite common. The usual culprit is a broken flexible cable.
If lens under warranty, just send to CSC

DIY will cost less than U$10. Just search for Canon 18-55 focus cable in ebay

Have the same issue with my 18-55mm IS . Fatigue, could you PM me your service to replace the cable / service the lens ?

Sorry guys, I don't want to fix this problem because I could not guaranty how long the cable will last.
After a few months, the same problem might reoccur.
On the otherhand, if you can order the cable similar to this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2X-FOCUS-FLEX-C...876?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27bc30ee44
We can meet at one place and I can guide you to DIY

Sorry, just want to ask if let's sat the CSC fixes this problem, it will probably be back after a few months too? (thou after the cost charged by CSC is probably more well spent on investing in another lens)

A bit difficult to comment on this. You can try to search this problem problem in Google to better understand the problem.
Maybe we can ask CSC what will they do to fix and prevent it from happening again

Thanks for the reply, will do. But if it ever happen to my 18-55, and (if) CSC charges $50+ and above for the repairs (+ workmanship etc), I think may be better off getting a 2nd hand.. or an upgrade.

*glup* Thanks, noted on the service fee bit.... I think I know what to do liao if my trusty 18-55 breakdown. *touchwood*

noted. Mine is not covered under warranty quite sometime ago...

i think you will be better off upgrading your lens... perhaps can change to a 17-50 f/2.8 by either tamron or sigma...

When the time comes (or when my BBB take over my mind and body), I will. Especially when I'm not good with fixing electronics parts stuffs like bro fatigue.
