From what I understand, 2x teleconverters are usually used with fixed aperture Zoom lens.

Has anyone tried using it with a 50mm or less prime lens?

Do u think those birding lens at 600mm are zoom lens? Those lenses uses teleconverter pretty often.

What makes you think that? You can use it with any compatible lens. Just be aware of the factors like image degradation, etc.

No such thing as using 2x teleconverters on fix aperture zoom lens.

I use a 2x teleconverter on my 300mm lens if I want the extra reach.

I seem to come across more people who uses TCs on primes than zoom...

Rashkae, just a scenario which i think will never happen to you (cuz you have a lot a lot of lenses) but just a scenario:
If you have to choose between using a teleconverter, and using post-processing to crop and enlarge the image, which would you choose?

Just a thought..

I may have misunderstood the usage of TC. Thanks for clarifying!

I'm using Nikon D7000. Which TC would you guys recommend? From Nikon or 3rd party ones by Kenko?

Hi, If you're planning to use teleconverter with 50mm,please don't if you want a sharp image.Get a proper lens like 85-135mm range. In general TC are for
longer lenses like 300mm and above because good quality lens from the big boys (canon, nikon) cost a lot more. TC from them are not cheap either and they are specifically designed for their long lenses.Third party TC are cheap but their performance is average at best. You can also get a proper third party long lens bearing in mind the bulk, weight and relative cost. Of course no harm to use third party TC if you want to experiment as it will not cost an arm or leg.

Nikon TCs will physically not fit in any but Nikon's exotics and the 70-200mm vr, vr 2.
3rd party is your only way. Unless you want to file off the metal tab which removes compatibility by filing it off.

I'm using the kenko teleconverter... I have both the 1.4x and 2x teleconverter, I love the 1.4x which was almost permanently mounted to my 300mm lens, but dislike the 2x because the IQ would degrade too much.
