Has this ever happened to you?

You are offered the job at the end of the interview, you tell me them that you will take two days to consider the offer. 2 days later, you call them up to accept the offer and the interview tells you, "sorry, we have found someone else and we would like to withdraw the job offer". Well, this has happened to me twice this year. One said- "The job requires you to carry heavy files and so we think you will have trouble. We think you will also have other problems,but she refused to say what they are". I told her that I rejected another job just because I wanted to accept this one and all she said was sorry. The other case was earlier this year, I called back to speak to her and asked her if she was free to take the call. She told me that she would call later in the day. I waited after 5 pm and I figured that she was very busy to call me back, so I decided to write an e-mail to her. I asked a few questions and also that I wanted to accept the job. The next morning, I read my e-mail and she said: "Sorry, we have found someone else". Subsequently, I wrote back and probed more. I found out that this was a case of miscommunication on her part as she thought I said I would like to consider was a polite way of saying no to the job offer. All she said was sorry. 2 days the ad came out again in the ST.

Has this happened to you? What is wrong with the employers of today? Taking 2 days to consider a job is reasonable isn't it? I heard that someone even called the interviewer after 2 days to request an extension to consider and this was granted. I have written to MOM and am awaiting their reply. What else can I do? Write to the ST? These employers should be highlighted to the public, but how?

Pointless effort. What to report? It's their right to hire other people who don't want to flip-flop and dilly-dally over an offer. This is SINGAPORE, not the USA. Over here, in 2 days, they can get 20+ applicants who will happily accept the offer ON THE SPOT.

All you will do is make yourself look like a bochup Singaporean who needs to complain over everything.

And the companies are right too - 99% of people who say "let me consider it" are actually gathering more offers, they are trying to bargain for higher salary. If you are a company that needs to hire people, and you have people saying Yes! on the spot and others hee-hawing for 2 days, who will you hire? Easy answer!

Typically when a person looks for a job, it is "we will contact you" instead of "let me call you back".

If they don't like you, they won't hire you. For me, dressing right and exuding confidence is key to winning the position. You also have to be firm and steady. The way you speak, pose, and react will tell prospective employers a lot.

Of course, when i was interviewed, i dressed smartly, spoke with confidence... And now i wear jeans and t-shirts to the office :bsmilie:

no offense, if you are good, they will wait for your reply. if any tom , dick or jerry can do that job, they will not wait for you.

there are FTs and other Singapoerans applying for the same job, hence if you are in need of a job urgently or desperately, don't hestitate, secure the job first.

Based on your story, could be because of your subsequent actions after the interview.

In any case, with my limited knowledge, to a large extent, it's the company's prerogative to hire who it wants to hire. You even have ads asking for specific races. I think dismissal/firing is where there are more caveats as to what they can do. But I could be wrong.

May I ask what do you mean "subsequent actions after the interview"? Both cases - interviewer offered the job on the spot and all I said- "I would like to consider and reply in 2 days."

Clarification - the ad did not ask for specific races or FT. Only Singaporean and PR.

I think it is reasonable for you to consider for 2 days as it is your rights.

I also think that it is reasonable for company not to hire you after you gave them a chance to reconsider.

You should have signed first or say you are going to take up the offer and let them prep the employment contract.

At most just MIA, or resign on 1st day of job

Saying that "this being best job opportunity ever" , "keen to do this job", etc (which most of us do in an interview), then turn around and say that "Er... I consider for a few days... " simply does not sit well with the potential employer.

You reminded me of a job interview with a recycling company.

The interviewer is a Ya Ya Payaya Director, all the words he say like got bone and he is very crude.

I was offered the job with a big discount on my asking salary.

At the end of the 1 hour interview he asked me: " So ... when can you report to work?"

I told him nicely: "Sorry Mr. ...... I resigned."

I picked up my file and walked out of the room.

Depending on what kind of job you are after, normally only shortlisted candidate will be contacted for a few more rounds of interview before an offer is tabled, so probably you have not make it clear or the employer felt you are just trying your luck, eventually they rather go for second best

You didn't show any enthusiasm that you want to do the job. People who have passion and enthusiasm will not hesitate.

If you are the only one who can do the job and the company needs you. Then you can tell them that you will consider.

But if anyone can do the job and you need the job. You should ask them when can you start work.

From the way I see it, you have already failed the correct attitude test. No employers in their right mind would hire you.

your big mistake is that u wants to consider first for 2 days after they already offered u the job.

if u need to consider, why in the first place u go for job interview? Unless u go for the sake of going for the interview and see how it goes, wait till they offer u then u seriously consider.

if u think i sound noob, sorry, i been in the work force since 2000. And so far job interviews i went which gave me job offers, i took no less then 1 day to give the company a reply.

so i will say, the problem dun lies with the coy but yourself and your mentality.

The considering part can be quite a turn-off.

Imagine if I have 2 equal candidates, equally qualified; one tells me he will consider, the other says that he can start work right away. Without a doubt I would feel that the latter candidate takes the job seeking much more seriously and isn't keeping my company's position as some kind of "safety" net if he fails other more attractive interviews.

The best part is if you had painted a beautiful picture about why you chose to work for the company: "Oh, I heard it's so wonderful and you guys are so successful! Oh boy it would be such an honour to work for you!", then at the end you just tell them "Sry bros, considering yar." :bsmilie:
