Hi guys...

I have been thinking lately that I should start a mentorship program to help inspiring photographer who is passionate about people and portrait photography.

Ideally, I will impart some of my knowledge in photography and running the business, however, I just not sure how to and what I need to do....

Maybe some of you can give me some ideas?

The mentorship will be my initiative to help promoting passion for photography and of course, it will be free. What I hope is, the people that I mentor will be successful in the future and will help the next person to grow.

Ok, hear from you guys about this idea..... but I need feedback on how to do it.

Regards,

Hart

Admire your spirit, pal. I suggest you seek a group of seasoned photographers willing to volunteer their time in such a program with you, if it is going to be a long term affair at all. I also suggest a not-for-profit program, as opposed to a free meal for all. Hope that helps!

Commendable but how do you decide who to take in? I expect the list to run into the hundreds digit.

well..... depends on class size? and the focus really... hahaha

I am not sure, that's why I am asking for advice.

I have a couple that PM me for offering their help, so will have a chat with them and
more people.

It's not going to be decided overnight as I would like to plan this right.

Any suggestions are always welcome.

There won't be money in exchange so I will be selective. I can't help everyone nor change the world but I will do what I can within my limit.

Oh my! can't believe the opportunity to learn from you may come true! I believe many others like myself will totally learn a lot and benefit from this :)

i would think that you would have to be very selective about the people you take under your wing. but its a wonderful gesture and even if it benefits one or two people, it would be infinitely beneficial i'm sure :)

Wow...like the SiFu and TuDi kind of relationship.....must go carry one hundred pails of water from the well every morning before you can start to learn the real stuff.... COOL! Wish more people are like you.

how would you select the right candidate? would you be able to list a few criteria here?

Hi nice to hear that..

It take lots of passion and time to be mentoring. I always believe learn on the job and create the passion in them by showing how you put your heart n soul into work. A person who work with their hobby always enjoy as much.

Just my 2 cents.

It will really be nice to have a mentor to turn to. Perhaps one way to be selective is to see the potential mentee's photo works? Maybe u can spot potentials in their works

wow! tks alot!

I remember Lance Lee from Offstone Pictures offers mentorship as well as paid courses.

http://www.offstone.com/career/

Maybe you could get in touch with him to pick his brain over coffee.

Hold a competition, define two test themes and from there, pick one or two padawans.

If imparting knowledge is the main goal, then maybe you can make video tutorials about people and portrait photography and upload them to YouTube? It will reach out to a wider audience than personal mentorship. :)

Just a thought. :)

not advisable. i recommend a 1-1 long term training.

its easier to monkey see monkey do. so...

if ur sports photographer, drag him on assignment, or find an opportunity where u dun have the pressure of assignment (lets say football match).
then u sit there, be a spotter, let him know what are the moments he can get, guide him to anticipate etc.

ya get the idea

I know... but I think if I do both, isn't it better?

well... ya can try...

simplify this bah. if u wanna get mentored, what is it u wanna learn?

for me i'll wanna learn abt thought processes. how u think and process. from there, adapt and modify to my own style.

no point teaching techniques when u can almost google anything under the sun abt that... nothing special
