Sunset Shoot @ Westlake

the lighting and the composition.


2. what one hopes to achieve with the piece of work?
A beautiful sunset and a relax picture

3. under what circumstance is the picture taken? (physical conditions/emotions)
The picture was taken during my last trip to Hangzhou. Waitng for a sunset shoot at westlake.

4. what the critique seeker personally thinks of the picture
I think that the picture is OK. If use the GND filter, the picture would be better. C&C are welcome.

The lighting is good n I like the graduated orange. Composition wise, I prefer to see more of the lake, and keep it simple. In your pic, there are too many shapes n forms that frame the glorious sunset, thereby not helping the viewer to focus on the main subject.

Thank you for your advice on the composition. I will improve on that next time.

The compostion is o.k. but some improvement if possible. As stated no GND is used, as the result no details from the ground, there are ways you could do, cut off the bottom 20% of photo or increase % from the sky or walk closer to the lake and show more reflection from the lake. Try to adjust your angle of shooting so that no other objects blocking the sunset or reflection of the sunset, and try to adjust the horizontal line, it is off. Overall the sunset is nice.

Well, I still prefer your pic#1 for the composition, for sunset photo horizontal is better.

equal amount of distractions in #2 as #1. except this time, you have a bird that's rather dark, in comparison to the sun which is too bright. that bird itself, with the overhanging leaves, are distractions enough.

#2 would have worked, if you could have gone closer, and gotten the guy standing next to the tree watching the sunset (sun included), without the overhanging leaves. although it's not a landscape, it would have been a nice calm scene.

#1 would have worked without all the "extras" in the scene. keeping it simple would draw the viewers to the colors of the sky and the sun, and not all around the frame with the leaves, bench and bollards.

Actually, the best time to shoot a sunset, is during the few minutes after the sun has set behind the horizon. The best time to shoot sunrise, is the few minutes right before the sun rises.
