This is another shot taken sometime back with the k-x + DA 55-300 + tripod n remote release just for comparing.

i feel a "half" moon produces much more details on the surface compared to a Full moon which is very bright.

just my 5 cents worth i may be wrong.

thx for viewing.

beautiful shot!
I tried with my 55-300
but it seems my location has a longer distance from the moon.. lol

Nice . I think I got the same shots too tonight and last night with the same setup
I notice u use tripod with remote . I believe this can be done with handheld easily .

Turn Yr cam to spot meter , use av mode , point to the mOon and shot . I think the moon is bright enough for handheld

Very nice shots from a 55-300!
Yeah, a non full moon will get more details with the 'side lighting'.
Really like #2.

yeah i think so.. but i got shaky hands.. =p

Good work. I like #2 too. It appears to me that the exposure for #1, is a little longer than #2 . Cheers ..

Nice shots guys.. The moon should be about 14% bigger than when it is furthest away. That has to do with its elongated tug-o-war orbt with the Earth. However it would have been much better for this event to take a photo of the moon near the horizon with buildings as reference. This would provide the reference for which the viewer could see the apparent larger size.:)

Airconvent do you mean something alittle like this? I was walking along Beach Road last night when I saw this & was reminded about the "Supermoon".

Man, I need to improve my skills, couldn't achieve anywhere near as detailed as rx7ong's with my Kx+DAL 55-300 handheld.

looks alittle "soft" :( how to improve besides using a tripod as I seem to also suffer from Shaky hand syndrome ;p

My humble contribution to the thread. 19th March 2011, 6.00AM. Cloudy morning. As the moon sets, the colour got more orangey.

Great photos guys! :)
Everytime something like that happens, I never have my camera with me.

genecor your shot is good, you just need to increase the "blacks" if you are using lightroom. if you give permission, i can use your photo and show you the result.

Here's my shot all the way from Russia, shot it last night.
I had to crop a lot to get this size.

Many of us have to crop our photos, unless someone is using a 600mm or something.

Genecor, what is ur setting for the Moon pic?

Looks to me like ISO is set to high. The Sun makes the Moon acts as a giant reflector. Thus u do not need a High ISO to shoot it. Thats why it can be shoot handheld.

inspired by this thread and went to shoot the moon today for the first time... comments are welcome
