camera 'zeroing'

dearest buddies,

when i look thru my view finder to take a picture, i tried to avoid a lamp post on the extreme left and the lamp post showed up a little on the lcd screen of my canon 500d.

i am using a 500d with a 18-200m lens at the widest angle (18mm) when i took the picture.

may i ask if is there a way to 'zero' my camera to have exactly what i see in the view finder and the lcd screen?

i used the live view to take a few pictures and what i see on the screen is what i get on the picture.

please kindly advice. thanks in advance!

500D's viewfinder only covers 95% of the actual scene, that's why the lamp post still showed up in your pic because it fell within the remaining 5% which the viewfinder could not see.

want 100% coverage? dump more dough for the 7D.

500d do not have a 100% viewfinder. So the view in viewfinder is slightly less than what is captured by the sensor. When you use live view, you are using the sensor itself to compose, so what you see in LV is what you get. There is no way to zero the viewfinder except to purchase a camera with 100% viewfinder. The other thing you can do is to crop your image in post processing.

Why not just look at the specs for yourself?

But I suggest you learn to do what many many many photographers before you did, before LiveView: Learn how to compose around the 95%.

Cost saving, and giving people a reason to shell out more $$$ for a higher model (product segmentation/differentiation)

I have the same set up, after shooting numerous times, I am more or less used to 95%. At least you can roughly guess the extra 5% more. Otherwise just crop the full picture to the 95% you see through your viewfinder.

The technical reason? so your camera can cost less to make, and you pay less to buy it.

Even the 5Dm2 is only 98%.

Only the 7D and 1D series are 100%.

And BTW, viewfinder percentage coverage does not mean size of viewfinder. 98% VF in 5Dm2 is still considerably much bigger than 100% VF of 7D.
