Dust on D3100 Viewfinder need advice

I can see a piace of hair nad some dust on my D3100 viewfinder it doesn't affect my pictures so its definitely not my sensor and I can still see it even if camera is off and there is no lens attached .

Tried blowing it off using the blower that came with the free cleaning kit and its still there.
called NSC and they said that there is a charge of 100sg since its considered general servicing and not just sensor cleaning.

can anyone advice me on how to resolve this without spending that kind of money just to remove some annoying dust? are there any other shops that could remove this without voiding the warranty

hi,

it should just be dust gathering on the focus screen which is directly above the mirror. try using the blower to get rid of dust there. sometimes its more difficult so you need to be thorough. my guess is the free blower you got is the tiny, about 3cm diameter one? that might not be good enough.

DON'T ever use a cotton bud/lens tissue/finger, or anything for that matter. it ll just leave more smudges and tiny dust specs.

Seriously Bro...if it isn't affecting your shots then you shouldn't mind too much. I have a piece of insect leg stuck to my view finder too. I couldn't remove it no matter what I did. Since it didn't affect my shots I didn't give a hoot.

i think some of us (like me) abit OCD about viewfinders. i will wash the focus screen of every film cam i get to make sure its extra clean =D

which reminds me... back when was in school, i picked up one of the school's D70s and it had some sort of small mite slowly crawling across the viewfinder. haha.

my case is not as serious as that its just annoying... you see it there but you cant remove it it like an ingrown fingernail hehehe

If the dust is on the other side of the the focusing screen, you can remove it and give it a good blow, and blow the interior of the penta mirror housing too. And make sure you handle the screen with pincers on the edges or the stub. And never try to clean the screen with any material or liquid just blow. actually, just to share, the best and safest way to clean a focus screen is to place it in a dish of warm, dish washing soap water. can agitate it around to get the dirt off. then rinse it out completely under running water. hold by the sides, and blow off all the water droplets before they dry or they ll leave water stains.

dont ever use alcohol. it ll dissolve the plastic etching and you ll be left with a useless piece of glass.. and a useless slr.. i ve done it 3 too many times =\

I have dust, hair, unknown particulars in the viewfinders of all my cameras, medium format camera, film SLR, DSLR. since it does not affect the images so I just ignore it, after sometime you will not notice about it.

if that really make you eye sore, you can spend the money and get it clean, but bear in mind that new dust particulars may land at another areas soon or later.

my advice, learn to live with dust shows up in viewfinder.

Sensor cleaning used to be free, until too many people have utilise it too much they stopped it a while back.

sensor cleaning is less than $100.00
Notice- Nikon sensor cleaning for warrantied bodies

the charge of lenses cleaning is much higher, the lens need to dismantle for cleaning, it is not a 5 or 10mins job.

if lens cleaning is free of charge, I think you probably will pay triple the current price for a lenses, and wait one or two month for lens cleaning.

Erm. When you buy a car will the dealer give you unlimited free car washes? Or give you unlimited oil changes during your warranty period? since oil in cars are prone to get dirty after some time, and cars are prone to get dirty?

Once you have tried it, you will realize it is not that hard actually. And you can switch focusing screens to split prism ones to have more fun with manual focus lenses.

if it's foc, u will see long queues everyday, asking for cleaning of their sensors.

furthermore, their interpretation of cleaning the viewfinder can also mean disassembling the entire viewfinder assembly and clean the pentamirrors inside, not juz a simple cleaning on the focusing screen which is accessible from the mount. it's not easy to do so in the first place, coz u haf to remove quite a number of parts first. it's like cleaning the internal elements of the lens. it's not as simple as u think.
