Lol...i cant help much....guess she is quite confused which or where or what lens suit her style

jack.. how do u know speedsun is my friend? hahaha he helps me? He only know how to confuse and poison me!!

:( really? bad idea to go tokyo then..should have chosen HK instead...ehehe thanks anyway :)

Voigtlander prices here fairly priced. Not much diff from the retail price in the US.

You may or may not save a few dollars in Japan, but what you would definitely miss out on is the buying experience when you visit the local Voigtlander dealer in Singapore.

I believe that many potential customers walk into Chiff's as strangers and walk out as new friends. I remember not too long ago walking in as a total newbie to manual lenses and not even the rangefinder system.

I was looking for a affordable manual lens for my M4/3 system and after spending quite a bit of time walked out with a lovely 40mm f1.4. I did not have any particular lens in mind when I visited his shop.

The friendly person behind the counter was kind enough to explain all the different lenses he had in stock and told me not to rush into buying a lens but to shoot more with my existing setup until I found a focal length that I liked and make a decision from there. I reckon he spent over 1 hour, never seeming impatient getting me to understand the difference of all the lenses he had.

Over a short time, I would like to believe that we have built up a friendship and he has never failed to dispense valuable advice on purchasing various lenses and camera gear even when it was not related to stuff he sold.

So, the choice is up to you but please do pay Chiff a visit before you do go to Japan. He might even point you in the right direction regarding all the specialty camera shops there.

* Before anyone flames me, I am not related nor have any business interest with Chiff. I just believe that the shop offers decent prices with excellent service.

Well said, and I too can attest to the same experience.

Thanks guys!

Actually it doesn't matter where you get your Voigtlander gears from, even if you get from US, Japan or HK, you will still get the same level of after sales service from me. Of cos, if there's some fees involved in repair, I might not be able to absorb them all. Anyway, it's not expensive to get Voigtlander gears repaired as they are usually very durable and hardy and they don't cost as much as the L counterpart to repair....

What most important is to get something to suit your needs. If you have no idea what to get, best do some research or try out your friend's lens before flying to Japan or HK to shop. And please... if it's your first lens, don't get the L brand (especially used ones). Try Voigtlander first and get a feel of how new lens work and behave first.

It's like buying a car after you just pass your driving test. Don't buy a 30 year old Jaguar or Aston Martin even though James Bond used to drive one. Get a decent Toyota or new BMW first and dwell into vintage cars when you have mastered driving. You will appreciate vintage gears and appreciate their charm better.

If you do visit Japan, get your gears from Map Cameras & Fujiya Camera. The two most frequented stores by RF folks round the world.

And don't think that in HK, things are all cheap there. Yes, new gears might be cheaper. Some Voigtlander lenses might be cheaper. But Leica prices are damn high over there. Even higher than in US, Europe and eBay.

Yes, everyone loves a good bargain, me too. And I will make sure I get the best deal for my iMac & iPad too! :) But you need to do your home work first, and know what you are buying, else it might turn out to be a even more expensive mistake....

Good Luck!

can i ask a question? wat about those 2nd hand old rangefinder or tlr? like yashica tlr etc?

Is it going to be cheaper in Japan?

You can find great condition things in Japan. But don't expect to pay bargain prices. Because Japan being a bigger market, have more photogs who are die hard film buffs. Hence, demand is higher. I don't see much Yashica TLR stuff over there though...

Rolleiflex are at least 30% higher than in Singapore. Don't forget you can even get brand new unopened Rolleiflex FX, FT, FW series Rolleiflex in shops in Japan. Hence, people there pay top $$$ for vintage stuff. And yen is at is highest against the USD right now. Though against SGD is still relatively OK, it used to be 80yen to 1SGD dollar less than 3 years ago. Right now is 63 or 64yen against 1SGD, and that's 20 percent increase pre the lehman brothers days...

Hence, buying stuff from Japan is not going to be cheap. But you get tip top condition gears from there. They are damn anal about condition of their gears. To be honest, Singapore is still one of the best places in the world to hunt for used Leica and Rolleiflex stuff.

Having said all these, Canon LTM lenses are plenty in Japan. You can get very good condition LTM lenses at relatively reasonable prices over there at shops.

As for prices, I can't say they are the cheapest, as eBay prices trade in USD is really dirt cheap nowadays....

Hahah.... so does many bro. Including myself. Still remember when he operates out from his house.

I think prices in Tokyo for new Voigtlander and Zeiss gear are slightly higher than Singapore or the US. But don't believe me, take a look for yourself (see links below). The cool thing about shopping in Tokyo is the extensive range of readily available new gear (usually no need to order and wait, you can have immediate gratification ), and the abundance of quality used gear. If I was in Singapore, I'd just buy from Chiif. In fact, if I was anywhere except Tokyo (where I am now), I'd still probably buy from Chiif ;)

I was in Japan in October last month and Chiif is definitely cheaper, LTM lenses were quite low on supply though.
