Actually it doesn't matter where you get your Voigtlander gears from, even if you get from US, Japan or HK, you will still get the same level of after sales service from me. Of cos, if there's some fees involved in repair, I might not be able to absorb them all. Anyway, it's not expensive to get Voigtlander gears repaired as they are usually very durable and hardy and they don't cost as much as the L counterpart to repair....
What most important is to get something to suit your needs. If you have no idea what to get, best do some research or try out your friend's lens before flying to Japan or HK to shop. And please... if it's your first lens, don't get the L brand (especially used ones). Try Voigtlander first and get a feel of how new lens work and behave first.
It's like buying a car after you just pass your driving test. Don't buy a 30 year old Jaguar or Aston Martin even though James Bond used to drive one. Get a decent Toyota or new BMW first and dwell into vintage cars when you have mastered driving. You will appreciate vintage gears and appreciate their charm better.
If you do visit Japan, get your gears from Map Cameras & Fujiya Camera. The two most frequented stores by RF folks round the world.
And don't think that in HK, things are all cheap there. Yes, new gears might be cheaper. Some Voigtlander lenses might be cheaper. But Leica prices are damn high over there. Even higher than in US, Europe and eBay.
Yes, everyone loves a good bargain, me too. And I will make sure I get the best deal for my iMac & iPad too!
But you need to do your home work first, and know what you are buying, else it might turn out to be a even more expensive mistake....
