International Lion Dance Competition 2011

I saw the floating pontoon the other day,
seems like they are losing alot of viewing space

Some photographers don't have the decency to disable their flash while the participants are performing even after repeated advice from the organizers.
PnS is still understandable as some might be dumber than dumb cameras but DSLRs is unforgivable.
There is no point using on-camera flash when you are 60m away and that goes for small flashes.
Are you trying to kill someone when you use a powerful flash at 10m.
Be thankful I can't reach you else I will kick you into the waters by accident.

are the spectators able to stand on the pontoon, or stand on the banks? ya, pls do not use flash as it is dangerous for lion dance performers.

I was there just now.
no spectators are allowed on the pontoon, and there is a barricade area at the bank infront of the pontoon.
the rest will have to stand behind the barricade, or at the side
very limited space i would say.

People can sit or stand on the steps at the bank but be careful as its a potential location for accident to happen.
There was a square metal foundation on the left side of the pontoon, I reckon its a good and safe place to shoot very close view of the action.
Bring your sharpest lens as I see people using L-lens and kicking ISO to 2000, my limit is 1600 and I'm still doing only a 1/80 which is too slow.
I'm going to bring out my primes tomorrow and my portable chair.

All you flashers out there, I got a portable chair and I'm not scare to throw it at you.
So think wisely before you fire off that flash as someone will get hurt (you or the performers) :thumbsd:

Hi,

Hows the yesterday the shoot? Is the area very small on the float?

Looked through my pictures, totally cannot use.
1/80 at iso 1600 is disgusting, blur + blur = blurry.

The small square is a permanent fixture near the float.
It is around 1m x 1m, good enough for one adult.

I wanted to use my primes today but I think I will give it a miss as I don't like getting my fur wet.

a permanent fixture near the float....

so it is near to the steps area!! Thanks! going down later for a rain walk shoot

Yes, but do be careful as the fixtue is metallic so it will be slippery.
I don't expect my fellow photographers to take pictures of you falling into the river instead of the lion dance.
Of course if that happens, maybe they can do a stop motion video of it with your feed in the PIP... I think that would be cool ;p

Just be careful please :D

I find it still find it quite safe ... Not alot of photographer at the same spot
