Aperture Ring loose

Hi, I got a friend who recently brought a Nikon Nikkor-S Auto 50mm f/1.4. When tested on site, the aperture ring seems to be fine, but after bringing it back, it seems a bit loose and shaky. I am wondering if there is a loose screw on the lens or something. Anyone with experience on the lens can advice. I search around online and all information I get is about Lens unable to mount on digital body without modification. BTW my friend lens isn't modded.

Tried testing the aperture ring after mounting on camera? Aperture ring will definitely feel loose before mounting on camera because the focus "screw" is not connected to the body's motor "screw". It should feel a bit different after being mounted on the camera body (that has a built in motor).

There's no screw for tightening the aperture ring.
There's one screw on the side of the ring but it's purpose is to engage the aperture ring to the lever that moves the aperture blades.

Adding a small amount of grease could improve the condition

You might have mistaken this lens as an AF lens.

Yo bro, thanks for the advice, there are some loose screw at the base of the lens which i have tighten and improved the condition of the glass, but 2 of it at the side is of a smaller slot than my available screwdriver as such, I am unable to tighten it. Will ask him to bring to shop for checking. BTW, how much do you charge for CLA on this glass? I am thinking of asking for Clean and Lub it to prime condition. You didn't change number right david?

By the way, just to clarify, what I am referring to is the "gear mechanism" that is connected to the camera body. It directly controls the AF of the lens.

Then I read again, you were referring to the Aperture Ring, not the Focus ring, so my answer is irrelevant. My apologies. Lol.

That's a bit stange. All the screws at the mount have the same screw size.
And also the screws of that lens are fixed with some sort "threadlock" glue so it doesn't come loose easily.
In fact, sometimes, you need to do some tricks to loosen those screws.

I have a Nikkor-S 50mm f1.4 too. I have taken it apart to clean before and if don't rem wrongly, the plastic aperture ring is supposed to turn into the thread which fits nicely. There's only 1 longer screw that opens/closes the aperture when turned.

Maybe you could take some photos and let fatigue have a look?;p

But it's made up of aluminum not plastic.

oh ya...I always thot to myself the black ring is plastic...and when I crudely convert it to Ai, I find myself sweating profusely trying to file it:bsmilie:
