Beginner D5000

I own a D5000 myself and below are the lens I would get.
D5000 already comes with a nice kit lens 18-55mm AF-S VR.
You can compliment it with the 55-200mm AF-S VR lens for your tele requirements.
24-70mm AF-S is of course a very good choice if budget is not an issue, the other option would be the 18-200mm AF-S VR f4-5.6.

55-200mm= Guarantee you lesser than $300 can get
But I would buy 55-300mm rather than 55-200mm. Only need to top up like $150-$200.
In the past, there's no 55-300mm lens, so I no choice have to buy 70-300mm which is more expensive. Now the 55-300mm is out (it's a new lens launched for less than 6 months) so I think it's wiser to buy 55-300mm.

Yes, 24-70mm f/2.8G is a Very Good lens if you could afford it.

Actually I would buy the 55-200 instead of 55-300. That 100mm does not make much difference, so it does not really justify that price increase, especially when it is optically the same. If I wanted to get the 55-300 I would rather top up a bit more to get the better 70-300 lens, which can also be used on FX.
I second the bit about the 70-300mm. It focuses much faster then the 55-200 or 55-300. Lovely lens. I don't know if that would be an issue to you though.
Tokina 11-16mm would nicely complement your kit lens. If you need more range then you can get the Nikkor 10-24mm.
a note here, tokina 11-16 will not be able to do AF on d5000 since d5000 does not have in-built AF motor. but it also depends. to some AF is impt in other situations other than shooting landscapes, and to some, AF isnt impt if it's solely used for landscape only, or they haf no problems sticking to MF only.

If you don't mind using a 3rd party lens and prefer to have Auto Focus feature,
1) Sigma 8-16 f4.5-5.6 HSM
2) Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 HSM
is recommended for you.
If you keen with Nikon brand lens, just go to:
- Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G
:thumbsup:TS, I have the D5000 also and the lens I got was more budget conscious.
The 18-105 is the kit lens from the D90 which I got from another CSer, which was brand new. I find that the 18mm has less distortion than the 18-55. At the 105 end its pretty comfortable for some mid-range zoom. And it feels pretty good on the D5000.
The Tamron F2.8 I use for low light or indoors. I called it now my 'Museum lens' coz no flash is allowed in the museum and the 28-75 range is quite comfortable, despite it being a FX lens.
Both lens are almost identical in size with the Tamron being slightly heavier. So I know how it fits in the bag and on the D5000 and best of all they share the same 67mm filter size.
You cannot go wrong with the DX 35mm F1.8. If you decide not to get any of the above lens, get this one. Put it on the D5000, switch it to P-mode and Live view, and you have a perfect point and shoot. Anyone with no slr experience can come up with nice pics, minus the flash. Trust me, I did it before.
Anyway, thats my 2-cents worth. Enjoy your D5000, its a great cam, Im still enjoying mine. Cheers! and have a Happy 2011!

I may not have chosen that Tokina model, but this is very sound advice, particularly if TS is budget sensistive. Take it one step at a time.
