Squishing sound while focusing 35mm 1.8 DX

My 35 mm 1.8 is having strange squishing sound while focusing, although it won't be noticeable outdoor, but its kind of obvious indoor, just some rubbing sound while doing AF.

Just to check with everyone, is this normal? My body is D7000 btw. Thank you in advance.

the camera body should have nothing to do with it since it is an AF-S lens.
Could be some rubbing noise as moving parts slide across each other.

Other than the noise, all seems ok?

Sometimes if you store the lens in a very low humidity environment, the greese inside lens would dry up. This would cause the squishing sound while focusing.

Thank yoy jeff7id, I only store it in a normal dry box, the lens is only 2 months old, wondering y? when i viewed videos frm youtube it seems to be totally silent, should i pay a trip to NSC?

maybe arrange some appointments around Tanjong Pagar during working hours, so you can drop by at NSC for diagnosis
I have that lens too.
I know it's not totally silent, though I haven't really found it to be noisy.

don't forget to report back on the diagnosis

I have a feeling the tech will give you 'one kind' of face and say "errr... sir, this sound is completely normal"

But on the first time you thought it's not normal right ?

It would be better you physically check with the other 35mm f/1.8DX and compare the auto-focusing sound though. You could go to NSC, and tell the staff that you want to try their 35mm f/1.8DX

That sound is perfectly normal esp you have not used tht lens in a while or storing in a dry box for a period of time as what jeffid just said earlier on.

So even you were to visit NSC they would tell u its perfectly normal and comparing their lens with yours, most likely they won't have the squishing sound as you have mentioned.

Best suggestion is to use ur lens frequently instead of leaving it in the dry box for a period of time or invest in a dry cabinet where you can control humidity.

i second this opinion. when i got the lens used, i thought i'd been conned because of the sound, but after a few days of using it the sound went away. one of my favourite lenses now.

If that is the case i'll just stick with it, as the lens is on the body 99% of the time, just that i don't take photos everyday,i guess if i use it more often it will be gone! Thank you both of you. Cheers.

My 1 week old 35 f1.8 is superbly quiet and fast, much better than my 50 f1.4, so the sound you have just described is certainly something you may want to check with NSC. But I have this feeling that it would go away after frequent usage. My 50 f1.4 has a bit of that sound though.. and I used it often.

My D7000 + 35mm F1.8 = no sound, great video.
