Hey all, a newbie here who just got into photography...

Recently i was practising some night shots, and i find that the flash for my dslr isn't really that fantastic, any good/economical brands of external flash to recommend for entry level?

i'm holding a d3100 btw.
Thanks & Cheers!

SB600.

U can try to get the Yong Nuo 560 for less than $150 i think.

Bear in mind that it is a manual flash and not TTL though but good for the pocket. :)

Thanks for the recommendations.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I would recommend SB700 for you.
It has similar functions of SB900, but in a compact body.

Try Yong Nuo 560 as ckoonyin suggested or you can get a SB600 to begin with, be sure to get a diffuser or bounce card.

If you find external flash too bulky you can try look for SB400 or even popup flash diffuser :)

Just a suggestion :)

go for the 467 instead... doesn't seems as popular here, but it is ttl compatible. flash is just a little weaker than sb600 tho after testing my friend's copy

What exactly were you trying to shoot? Flash may be a hindrance sometimes.

Could you explain why your flash is not really that fantastic ?

I suspect that it's due to the technique, rather than the flash itself ....

Is the SB400 available in Singapore? Can't seem to find it ard here. Also, is the SB600 very bulky?

If you said SB600 very bulky, so what will SB900 look like ? ;)

SB600 is just slightly bigger and definitely better than SB400.

I realise that when I take a picture w my D3100, there is this... Shadow, I think, that will appear at the bottom of the picture. If its a problem due to my technique, then may I know how can I change this? Thanks! :)

i suspect the problem is due to the lens hood... maybe try removing it?

Other than the lens hood getting in the way, this is also often due to shooting wide with a physically long lens when using the pop-up flash. Physically, the pop-up flash did not stand tall enough and the long lens get in the way of the light.

Once I used a D40 (similar in size with D3100) with an 18-200mm. When taking shots at 18mm with the pop-up flash,
the physical length of the lens obstructed some of the light and cast a semi-circular shadow at the bottom of the image.

If you do not have plan for an external flash, you may want to fix a pop-up flash diffuser like those from Gary Fong. It doesn't solve the problem completely but it does helps

Was trying to shoot photos of some fancy boats parked near changi village, in poorly lit conditions... cant really see anything in the photo after shooting...

Cheers.

You see that during national day stadium NPP. Gazillions of flashes popping. No way they can illuminate with any detail at 30 metre distance.

Think you should be using tripod and long exposure instead of flash.

You should use a tripod instead, without firing any flash.
