Yes, there's a few macro shooters who did that before. Results are very nice as well. In case you are looking for something more convenient and willing to pay, LitePanel does offers this solution. http://www.litepanels.com/lp/products/still_photography_led.html

Personally, I find it too expensive :sweatsm:.

personally, i find that the led lights give quite a nasty bluish/cool colour tone to the image.... which is quite unpleasant (though u can tweak the white balance later)

its more the person than the gear i think.. :bsmilie:

its useful cutting down on the AF hunting time when u do some types of macro work..

Led Light Painting of subject over 30 secs exposure. No colour balance problem as you can see. Think you can see a faint image of me painting with the torch on the right heheh... You have to go to my photo gallery to see the actual larger size. Frankly I use LED to light a lot of my shots in the last few years heh.

Basically I want to use a led light for a point and shoot camera as the on-camera flash is inherently weak. It's mainly for family snapshots.

generally, people will be more comfortable with flash than a continuous light source pointed at them, but LED light are more gentle than hot light source.
you should able to get more neutral result with blending with ambient light.

Dracula-look or other types of feel depends more on the angle/direction/position of the light source than the type of light source

Below shot with a 36 bulb LED panel last week

the shadows are not as 'harsh' vs a regular flash

these panels are usually no more than the size of your palm... often smaller

BUt LED light that is static and aiming at a human subject might not be strong enough. I do my product shoot and like my bike by painting. I would run the light allover the bike and let the camera's CMOS sensor "soak" in the lighted scene. I control the intensity but with a human, you are worry about them moving...even if a bit.. it can effect the shoot due to blurring of minute movement heh.

But I have seen those multi LED lights lighting system used for illumination which some folks use it to light up a photo scene of a portrait. But I have not tried that. Shooting people not my scene heheheh... apart from making funny shots of people at gatherings and then DI it. hahahah..
