Hi Guys!

I am new here. A friend recommended this website for tips on photography and after browsing, I find it very very useful especially for newbies.

I am starting to get very interested in photography and I am actually planning to buy my 1st DSLR.

My choices are between Canon's 550D or Nikon D90.

I woud highly appreciate if someone can enlighten me about these things:

1.) Which is better for entry level, 550D (also considering 60D, but a bit short on budget), or Nikon D90?

2.) I have an offer for a 2nd hand Nikon D90, bought in August 2010 for 1.2K (complete package offered including the basic kit lens . A brand new 550D only costs 1.5K with an 18-135 Lens and my interest favors Canon....

Please advise.

Thanks in advance...

come on man, this question have already been discussed to death
1) we can't deceide for you cause you are the one handling the cam and no one else.
2) all dslr works the same way, it's not about the axe, it's about the wielder.
3) canon user will tell you canon good, nikon user will tell you nikon good.

sorry to gun you down but with a little effort you will not get flame.

Easy
Flip a coin
head chose Canon
tail chose Nikon

Photo - get Nikon
Video - get Canon

It'll come down to these 2 factors trust me!

@SnipSnap91 Thanks man! appreciate it..you're right..it's not about the axe.
@Yutaka Go..good suggestion..since I still dont know which one to choose ;)
@MRSAMO..thanks for the tip! ;)

And then there are the other brands as well if you want to get more bang for your buck. Why not read the "What DSLR to get?" FAQ at the top of the newbies corner?

you mean the Canon cant do photo and the Nikon cant do video?

nubis should worry on how to utilize their camera within their reach and the physical comfort on their hand rather than comparing different brand and models IMO :D

Then just follow your heart. :)

Pentax Kr?
Cheaper, better high ISO performance and more features (on camera HDR, on camera shake reduction, etc).

Either camera is good enough.
If you don't need the top LCD panel and some additional buttons for faster access, the 550D is a good choice.
Frankly, the 2nd had price for the D90 ($1200) is not attractive to me. A new one is not that expensive nowadays.
A Pentax K7 is probably about $900 w/o lens, and I do believe a 550D new is not to expensive at street prices.

The best way is go down to the shop and get the feel of the cam. That's the best way to choose!;)

I agree with what most say here... go down to the showrooms to get a feel of both yourself...

It is like buying a canary (although I do not condone caged birds, just using it as an analogy), get the one that "sings" to you the most.

Canon, head down to Vivocity.

Nikon, mosts courts or Fuji/Xerox tower in CBD.

you mean the Canon cant do photo and the Nikon cant do video?

The Nikon seems to have the edge on picture quality and the Canon just looks better for video. Looked all over youtube and vimeo and haven't seen a Nikon video that I liked.

Follow your heart. It's important that you are comfortable with your camera, otherwise you may just leave it aside not using it.
D90 has better handling, but if size matter to you, it may turn out to be a curse. The only advantage on 550D over D90 is just the resolution, oh ya video too.
18-135.. not so recomended, some may tell you it's sharp, but you can get better one with this kind of money (this is a entry level lens but not a cheap one).

get the cheaper one and throw the budget into lenses instead?

unless there is something the other camera that die die you need.

i'll get the 550D anytime.. btw, I owned 550D before.. now considering buy it again..

Try them both and pick the one that feels more natural in your hands.

This site is having a quite detailed comparison between the 2 cameras.
Note that kit lens for D90 is 18-105mm VR instead of 18-55mm VR.

Have a good readup ;)

Thanks dude!

I've read this some time ago and it really is very detailed.
Seems like D90 really has an edge when it comes to picture quality.
